Had the pleasure of being taken out for dinner at Remy's this evening on Kings rd, St Leonards. This was the first time I had been there along with my wife courtesy of two friends. This restaurant had formerly been a cafe and many years before that an Edwardian dairy shop. The shop front is notable for its beautiful curved bay and Arts & Crafts period detailing. The Interior is pleasantly lit with a cosy warm feel to it and at time of writing a nicely decorated Christmas tree in the window adjacent to our table- very festive. This is a Filipino restaurant that is popular with Filipino medical staff up at the Conquest hospital, apparently popular with them due to it's authenticity and great atmosphere - a pretty good place to start. Unusually perhaps, they also serve Tapas on a Thursday evening and English dishes during the daytime period. Onto our food: My wife and I started with the 'Filipino Siomai,(steamed minced pork dumplings) and the 'Lumpiang Shanghai'( pork/veg mini spring rolls). Both were exemplary and homemade and served with nice dips- delicious. Next up my wife opted for a daily special of steamed Sea Bass and for myself the 'Lechon Kawali',( Filipino crispy pork belly). Both were excellent. My wifes fish arrived with wilted pak choi, fresh flavours of ginger and spring onion and a delightfully light broth. My pork was quite chewy but well seasoned and satisfyingly meaty with its serving accompaniment of 'mang tomas sauce' providing the sweet sour notes of tamarind to counterpoint a fresh salad and some lovely sweet potato chips. The fish was served with jasmine rice which was plain but tasty. As a side dish I ordered a substantial 'Mango salsa salad' which had an excellent balance of salty sweetness. To finish we ordered 'chocolate brownie', 'Mango cake' and 'Lime & Pistachio tart'. All were not overly sweet and had a superb texture. Even the coffee to finish was amongst the best I have had, not bitter or grainy, just pitch perfect and full bodied. The service was congenial, menu-informative and friendly . Before leaving we chatted with the owner and his wife who were delightful and who evidently take great pride in their eatery. Great food and great service. The bill?- damned reasonable by any expectations of eating out, around £11 for a main and £4-50 for a dessert. I'd even chance my arm to say its amongst the very best value in a resurgent St Leonards. If they don't become the go-to for cosy diners then I'll eat my hat but first I have...
Read moreWe were a party of ten, yes, ten! It was a birthday celebration and none of us had ever eaten in this restaurant before. We booked up well before, and communication (email) with the restaurant was rapid, very good and clear as well. We arrived at 7.45pm to find our table beautifully prepared, and the restaurant FULL to the rafters! In response to an email request for what people might like to eat, because we were such a large party, our starters were rapidly served. The starters pleased everyone, and the main courses were an absolute delight too. We drank both white and red wine, and a couple of guys had a beer too. The atmosphere in this venue was excellent, the service superb, and all the staff were bearing smiles, it was immaculately clean, fresh looking with great decor - it just felt so welcoming and cosy! My wife and I are definitely going to...
Read moreI can fully understand why this is rated so highly on trip adviser. We went there with friends for an evening meal. The tables were kept by owners Remy and John, who were friendly, informative and attentive. The atmosphere was warm and calming, and the restaurant itself clean and tastefully arranged. On to the most important aspect. Food and drink. The wine list was extensive, with quality wines, and there was also a good selection of lagers and golden ales. So something for everyone. As for the food itself. Absolutely divine. From the starter through to the dessert the food was delicious and the portions were just right. All four of us had something different, and each of us agreed it was top notch fare. This restaurant is a real gem of an establishment and is on a par with any top restaurant I've eaten in. And the price and value...
