Toby, Danny and team are absolutely legends. Food is very reasonably surprised and Toby's micro-brewing is spot on! If you like a stout, you'll find the Toby Porter very nice and there are a selection of lighter ales too. Vegan ale is denoted with a V on the board behind the bar or you can ask and a fun fact: there is a massive whisky list and they are all reasonably priced too! May I recommend Laphroaig - lovely and smokey! If you are after alcohol free, they do have a small selection of alcohol free beer reasonably priced.
Dogs are made welcome too and if you see little Lunar (Danny's puppy) you're in for a treat as she is adorable. A pint will set you back around £2 - £3 and food is way less than a tenner for a main - BUT this does not mean that quality isn't good - they are offering quality food at an extremely reasonable price. With covid, if you want sauce, don't hesitate to request it! New additions Karen and Charlie (female) are lovely too and very attentive.
For years now they have bent over backwards for me and they don't mind you charging your phone either! Despite the lockdown threat to their business over the last year and a half, they've still got a smile on their face for anyone that visits, new or regular! Please be sure to give them a follow on FB. Meanwhile Glossop has a lot to offer including Crowden being a short drive for a ramble and there's the market and other bits to do as well as being in High Peak if you are coming back from a wander around the wider Peak District for a bite to eat that is not going to sting you in the pocket!
Also, a generous sized and covered beer garden for a smoke/vape and space for non smokers to have fresh air too.
Trains to/from Manchester Piccadilly and buses are regular from Manchester and Ashton (can get back to Manchester leaving the pub as late as 10pm) and there is a reasonable daytime bus service from Buxton (check your bus timetable for the 61 to be on the safe side!). There is a small amount of parking in the evenings right outside but keep up to date with parking restrictions applied by the council. Pub is shut on Tuesdays!
Check out their website for when bands will be able to perform in the huge upstairs band room again! I hope you enjoy the Globe...
Read moreCouldn't disagree more with the poor reviews on this site. Yes the pub is full of hippy types, that's a bonus, yes the veggie food is cheap, another bonus and yes the ale is brewed on site and i thought it was good stuff. Me and the missus travelled from Manchester to meet up with friends from Glossop and visited the Globe for the first time last night and we wish we lived nearer. The overall quirkiness the pub exhibits, from the young bearded staff to the extensive and tasty veggie menu are the perfect antidote to the brash branded chain pubs that populate most high streets. The food was homemade and very reasonably priced and I know for certain that if this pub was in Manchester it would be packed to the rafters and twice as costly. Some people need to take a good look at the alternatives available and enjoy the fact that pubs like this still exist and celebrate the independent nature of the Globe and the fact it can still be busy early on a Friday evening when other pubs are struggling to stay open. If you go have the chickpea and spinach curry it was lovely and smile inwardly at the sullen bearded barman who will not win any awards for charm and marvel at the "kids" going to the pub on a Friday!! a thing that i thought had completely died out in the late nineties. Alternatively there is a new Wetherspoons down the road where bland comfort and standard fare are the reliable norm and provide a commercially viable but heartless experience and will probably spell the end for these quirky little watering holes. P.S Also try The Oakwood...
Read moreIt is quite sad to have to be giving a fully Vegan place a 1* review. But it is easily done when it is obvious the staff at The Globe are obviously extremely shallow and uninspired in life to give anything else a try other than a job they quite clearly hate.
In hindsight it makes complete sense why they would feel this way. I couldn’t imagine having to turn up most days and get put in my place by customers, being clueless about the food I’m serving daily.
Talking of hindsight… If anyone is blessed enough to be served by the blonde lady with glasses. I cannot recommend enough not asking about allergens. You’ll be met with huffing and puffing. Likely because it’s embarrassing to not be educated on something you do almost daily. That would be unpleasant to be shown up on that. Don’t ask for your money back on a dish which you can’t get an answer for on allergens which has sat on the table for 15 minutes. You will witness more of the disdain for a job this person has no confidence, knowledge or will to be in.
I did laugh on the inside when I was questioned on what table I was sat at. Since the staff had moved tables around and not put them in numerical order. This questioning happened to the guy served before me and then happened to myself.
Try Subway a quarter of a mile up the road. The people serving there are fully confident in themselves, what they are doing day to day and are fully clued up...
