Horribly disappointing. As a family of 4 staying at the near by Travel lodge, we decided to have a last evening meal at the Pear Tree. From the outside it looks great. Ample parking, curb appeal, very nice. But initially we were a little put off by the separate entrance round the side for people with children. There's an adult's only dining area with their own entrance at the front. Fair enough I guess, but we immediately felt second class. We carried on. We waited a good 10 minutes with multiple staff members walking past us before eventually being asked if we wanted a table. The kids were keen to go and play in the indoor play area. But after checking it out it has a big sign over it that says it's only for children aged 5 and under with the older kids area at the side. This older kids area consisted of two game consoles (neither working) a grabber game machine (with only two toys left in it). And another prize game (change required). This resulted in disappointment for both kids, aged 8 and 10. We pushed through. You need to order your own food at the till and pay up front, they made multiple mistakes with both our food and drink orders which were corrected but it took about 10 to 15 minutes just to place the order. I think the guy may have been new. Although it didn't feel that way. The food was a reasonable price and plenty of it but my Giant Yorkie Wrap, which I'd been looking forward to all day as I knew we'd be eating there tonight, was the biggest let out of the night. Have you ever had left over Yorkshire pudding and you've tried to microwave it? It goes so hard and chewy that it's hard to bite into it. That was what it was like. I literally could not cut through it with the knife. I had to pick it up with my hands and I could hardly even tear it apart. I left most of it because it gave me such dreadful indigestion just trying to eat it. There was more stuffing than anything else and the pigs in blankets were so dry we think they may have been left over from Christmas day. The staff were very friendly, our waiter (who I'm sure was only about 14, bless him) was a star. But this did not make up for the rest of the disappointing experience. To top it off the restaurant was so unbearably hot that before our food had even arrived I had a banging headache. The kids struggled to eat because they were so hot and we all had to take turns in going to stand outside for a few minutes, 2 or 3 times throughout the meal, just to make it bearable. In the end we abandoned, all 4 plates hardly touched and went to Macdonald's over the road for McFlurries to cool off. I've included pictures of my actual meal, compared to what I was hoping for. I know it never looks like the picture but I could of made a new pair of boots from that Yorkshire pudding. The lovely staff did offer to get me a fresh meal but by that time we were so hot and fed up we just...
Read moreWhen I arrived there were plenty of parking slots available, there are also disabled parking bays near the entrance. On leaving, the car park had filled up, still some places left, but this is a large, busy and very popular venue. I hadn't booked on a Sunday as it had been a last minute decision, but I was still found a table. Busy with carvery. Busy with families and kids. Vegans and vegetarians catered for on an extensive menu. Greene King site. Reasonably priced and huuuge portions. I had a Greene King beer, but it was pulled flat with no head and tasted vinegary, but staff were happy and obliging to replace with a different drink. Flat pints do not taste anything like a creamy headed beer. Young uns today are more used to flat lagers etc and seem to think it's ok to pull a flat beer. Nope, they taste horrible! I had been allocated a numbered table on arrival but while I was returning my drink, my table got given to other folk just as my starter was arriving. So there was my starter going cold with a load of strangers gaggled around it while I was at the bar. Waitress seemed confused. Got resolved, but with the table system in place that shouldn't happen. I had the halloumi fries starter which came without the spring onion garnish, as described, shame. I then had the roasted root vegetable pie - sweet potato, butternut squash, beetroot with chips, peas, carrots, gravy. Looked great when it arrived and it was tasty and it was a good plateful. The chips were delicious. The pie was too, but it was heavily weighted on the pastry side - 2/3 thick pastry and a third on content. I would far have preferred less chunky thick pastry and more tasty innards, would have been more balanced. I had ambitiously requested an Eton Mess, but they had none, so plumped for the apple pie, yes, I know, more pastry! Their apple pie was superb, smooth as silk, fabulous mouth feel and extremely tasty. Best part of the meal! Huge portion, as in, it was a quarter piece of pie, massive. There were plenty of busy, efficient, polite staff, a good team operating, considering how busy it was and, yes, I...
Read moreWhat a Sunday sham this place is. We had our grandchild with us for Sunday dinner so thought we’d give this place a go ( stopped going years ago because of the poor food/service on Sundays ).
This isn’t a slant of the service but my phone had no signal, and the free WiFi wasn’t up to much so it took a long time to order ( the queue at the bar didn’t look tolerable). Once ordered I have to say the drinks came reasonably quick, and our grand daughter had ran off playing so all was good. We decided to tackle the carvery line and assumed, that despite there only being 2 out of 4 meats out this would be sorted by the time we reached the front of the queue. It wasn’t ! I’d heard one of the members of staff saying to the other to reduce portions as they were running out, somewhat un professional to say the least. We were served what, at best, looked like child portions of meat. We continued up the self service section and went to sit down. I have to say that what we ate was hot, which I know is always a challenge at a carvery, but the stone hard boiled potatoes ( yes they were hot ), were far from satisfactory. I did draw this to the attention of the “team leader”, along with the lack of meat, the response was a rather flippant, couldn’t care less “ we are busy aren’t we, we can’t keep up “. This young lady did look very young and I make exceptions for her manners, however I can’t believe that they will take your money for a product that they know they can’t deliver and then offer no satisfactory explanation or resolution.
I am scoring the service and atmosphere 3 as I don’t think it was that bad on balance, but the food situation was atrocious and I think that a 1 is being generous.
I’d also like to add, that I did have a breakfast here a couple of months ago, the service, food and atmosphere was a more than satisfactory 4/5. The restaurant was very quiet at this time.
Come on guys get your act together, your busiest day surely deserves your...
