Elegant pub hotel with tasty breakfast Arrived late but met very friendly pub staff 🥹. The room is so lovely (and huge!! — coming from London and its vicinity). Wish I could stay longer but… maybe I’ll return to Lancaster next time, even just to stay here! I almost want to keep this gem and only tell family and friends, but the place deserves recognition. Bathroom is spacious with nice amenity. I really appreciate the cookie jar ☺️ and the emphasis on local produce from food to Cumbrian shower gel and conditioner. And I can’t be more grateful for that they kindly allowed me to store my luggage for a few extra days after checking out <3 Breakfast: beautifully presented and of nice portion. Though my egg was fried instead of poached as requested, the skill is not bad. Local sausage tastes delicious and meaty. Mushroom is well seasoned and buttery (something is probably microwaved- ding*). And it’s always enjoyable to have a proper full English with black pudding. Tea and brewed coffee and yoghurt and granola available too. Toast costs extra pound so I’ll save my carb quota for the later conference sandwich at the university. The dinner menu, also with local offerings, sounds quite nice and thoughtful. Sadly I couldn’t make to an earlier train.

I was well impressed by the room, location and the helpful staff. My two drawbacks are: 1.My bedroom was located 2 floors up,there is no lift and I am slightly disabled, ( but the staff carried my suitcase). 2. I wish all hotels had a shower matt. As at most hotels including the Borough, there wasn't. one. On the marble floored shower,my foot slipped a couple of times.!! It shakes one up. Stayed again late October 23. Still a brilliant place to stay, they put me in a ground floor room which ,I appreciated. The room was spotlessly clean. I turned the heating on,and had a great nights sleep. Shame,I had to leave to catch my train But,I will be returning in 2024. The staff were also first class. *****HIGHLY RECOMMENDED *****

We booked for a party of 4 to celebrate a graduation and it was a lovely time! Staff were attentive and polite. I had the duck and potato dauphinoise, which was really tasty. I wanted to change the broccoli for pretty much anything else but the only substitution was peas. Thought it was strange they didn’t have any carrots to hand. Others in the group got the steak and a pie and enjoyed theirs too. I also had a pumpkin spice martini which was really nice. It got pretty busy as the night progressed and they forgot our desserts, but our waitress popped over and realised they hadn’t come out yet without us even saying anything.

We stayed at The Borough as part of a wedding party for two nights. We arrived late and were warmly welcomed and shown to our room. We were pleased with the modern look of the room. The bathroom was fantastic and the shower excellent. The massive bed was also really comfortable and we enjoyed the selection of tea and coffees. The free drink was also a nice treat. We could not find a hair dryer in the room and the bathroom door or wardrobe door did not shut properly.

We did have some issues with housekeeping during our stay. We realised in the morning we only had one set of towels and cups so had to call up for these (which were promptly brought to our room).

When we arrived back to our room late after the wedding on the Saturday night we found our door ajar and the lights left on after housekeeping had been in during the day. Clearly this was a concern as it meant our belongings had been left unsecured all day. Furthermore, although we had anticipated housekeeping may come into our room to replenish tea etc we did not expect things to be moved and touched in our room. For example earrings I had left on a table had been put into my husband's watch box. The room had not been left in a mess and we had ensured the bed was clear and our belongings together. Therefore we were not overly happy that things had been moved or put away like this as we found it unnecessary.

The restaurant is very nice for breakfast and the breakfast selection is very good. Once we received breakfast we found it to be delicious. However the staff were clearly over stretched. Both mornings we had to ask several times for toast, ketchup and tea. The fruit juice table was not replenished very often. They seemed to be juggling check out as well which added to the stress. I think it would be good to have a designated check in/ out desk as we also found this confusing when we arrived, having to go into the restaurant.

Overall the hotel has a lot of potential and is nicely presented but is just missing that extra touch of service to make...

Last minute direct online booking on a Wednesday evening - visiting daughter and too tired to drive back on that M6 to Worcester.

Although restaurant clearly heaving when I rang... Barman who answered phone and subsequently the Manager, both still took time to be polite, really helpful and accommodating. (And same when we arrived in person a bit bedraggled).

Your staff are exceptional. You need to tell them this. I don't say it lightly - I'm in a client focused trade and believe you me I value a smile and that kind of 'genuine' welcoming service.... Very, very rare indeed.

The location - cobbled square oozed history. I'm from Harrogate and partial to a bit of an historic setting! The building is rather grand yet welcoming. Loved the bar decor with its worn red leather settees and chairs and dark wooden floor. Interestingly had a slight Aussie vibe to it, think it was the wood and style of bar. The restaurant was busy (a wet Wednesday evening too) and had a good buzz. Didn't eat there that night, too late, but will next visit.

Ahhh the room was exquisite... Georgian grandeur decorated simply and tastefully. Spotless.

OK I was upgraded to the Suite.... and very thoughtfully so, due to my leg injury - appreciated, thank you. The bed was simply to-die-for! The wet room type shower was great; plenty of warmed towels. I LOVED it! Wished could have stayed few more days.

Breakfast included. Again a great morning welcome in the restaurant. Friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Great choice of breakfasts; cooked breakfast was delicious.

I would (and will) recommend this hotel to everyone. We will be back in December for my daughters...

The Team at The Borough were helpful, courteous and extremely accommodating. Our stay, for a family occasion, was enhanced by the brilliant staff at The Borough, who did all they could to make our stay a special one. Our room was clean, bright, and very well equipped. It was a tad on the warm side and it may be an idea if guests were shown how to adjust the heating in their particular room on their arrival. We could not fault the cleanliness and freshness of the room and bathroom facilities. The catering and quality of the food was good, even if the service tended to be a bit on the quirky side. One of the party of eight on our table was waiting for over ten minutes for her starter, which arrived long after the rest of us had finished the course. A similar occurrence happened during the desert course, with one chap receiving his crumble a quarter of an hour after the rest of us. Small grumbles as the food was truly excellent, but a relevant observation that should be taken on board when catering for larger parties. Breakfast was good, though with the Borough Full English there was no toast and butter, which was a bit unusual. Again, the service was a touch quirky, with my wife's request for toast and jam being completely overlooked. All that aside, we enjoyed our stay at The Borough and have already recommended it to friends. The complementary drink as a welcome for guests is a lovely gesture too. Overall then, just a quick brush-up on the ordering and serving of the food front, and full...
