I recently visited The Quarterhouse for breakfast after a morning park run, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. While the poached eggs and sausage were tasty, the bacon was tough, and the sourdough was so hard it was nearly inedible.
The bigger issue, however, came after I finished my meal. I accidentally left without paying, a mistake I quickly realised and returned within 10 minutes to apologise and settle the bill. To my surprise, about 15 minutes later, I saw a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page with a screenshot from their CCTV, captioned, “If anybody knows this lovely couple…please let them know they ‘forgot’ to pay their bill.”
The use of “forgot” in quotes made it seem like I hadn’t paid on purpose, which was absolutely not the case. Mistakes happen, and I corrected it immediately. I was shocked they posted this online before waiting a reasonable amount of time to confirm it was truly a mistake. The post stayed up for nearly an hour, accumulating over 40 shares and multiple comments, some from people I know, but many others didn’t. If it hadn’t been for the support from my colleagues, this could’ve caused serious damage to my reputation.
Eventually, after several people pointed out how inappropriate the post was, they took it down. However, it was a deeply uncomfortable situation.
I would suggest the restaurant be more careful in how they handle situations like this and consider giving customers more time to resolve mistakes before resorting to public shaming on...
Read moreStumbled upon this small restaurant today (Sunday, 2pm) having seen several possible places to eat in the vicinity, and we were glad we chose to eat here. All the contenders appeared to have space for walk-ins but The Quarterhouse had a very interesting menu, including vegetarian and seafood options (ideal for us) and boasted "chef-owned".
The lunch menu is short but imaginative, clearly including a good selection of local produce and covering all the bases of meaty, fishy, veggie/vegan, with British and Mediterranean options. Seafood was particularly well represented.
The drinks menu, too, has something interesting for everyone, including a few interesting homemade soft drinks.
Service was polite and helpful. Decor bright and airy with beautiful tree slice tables.
But the food... Exemplary "small plate" dishes, simple but beautiful, with top quality ingredients and put together with clear pride. My wife's Seafood Benedict in particular exceeded expectations.
The lunch menu has a very small selection of sweets but the toffee apple tart was was amazing: I'm not qualified to describe this mini steamed pudding, bursting with a flavour like butterscotch, a portion of apple cooked with rich, dark treacly flavour, balanced by a very clean, sweet vanilla ice cream.
The coffee was superb too. The Americano, perfect for my taste, may need more water for others though.
Lancaster has become one of our favourite food destinations and we particularly look forward to returning to The...
Read moreI went here last week and gave it 5 🌟 so went again this week. BUT sorry to say won't be going EVER again. Under cooked RAW poched eggs. Asked for coffee with my brunch. But coffee came 10 min before brunch. So had to complain. On both occasions didn't have tomatoes, steak or eggs. But you could have eggs on brunch. You can't substitute your bread for 1 mushroom. You have to pay £2.00 even though your not having bread. Which didn't happen on the first visit. £35.30 for sausage ,egg & bacon plus a coffee. X 2 . NOT CHEAP. The atmosphere is great and so is the service. But it ends there. When complained about the extra charges just got a reply of WELL WE DONT DO SUBSTITUTES & WELL THATS WHAT THE KITCHEN SAYS. WELL this customer says will be never going back. AND will let everyone know. 😘
I see the owner has replied. I did leave a 5 star review the first time , BUT edited it after my second visit. As for the eggs poached we received, you should try them , !!! When you cut into them RAW. AND on a second note seeing as you've kindly replied. Myself and my wife have both been seriously ill Monday and Tuesday, Purley down you your meals. Need I say more, secondary note you haven't mentioned how we had to pay extra for things when we tried to exchange toast etc for an egg and mushroom . £2 for a single mushroom and £2 for an egg. Funny that. The week before we had things changed at no extra cost. ...
