We had a takeaway from Doner Summer a few years ago and had great memories of it so we decided to take our children for lunch. We booked the first available slot (12pm on a Saturday) and thankfully it was reasonably quiet. The staff was lovely: very nice and helpful, without being in our face. The place was clean - and no big light which is always a bonus! We ordered a chick'n burger for the children to share, and 2 different doners, as well as a sharing plate of cheese and bacon tots and one of an animal fries. We were very excited and enjoyed the first bites but very quickly the "cheese sauce" became sickening as it was loaded with grease but didn't taste much of anything. It is more like a hollandaise, very buttery. The tots are amazing but again they were loaded with excellent bacon and that same "cheese" sauce. The chick'n in the doners was too salty and very chewy, and the doner flat bread didn't taste very fresh. The burger chick'n was not cooked properly (the middle was still soft). We ended up leaving half burger as well as half the tots and some fries, which is a shame. We were offered doggy bags and initially accepted but realised we would not be able to eat more of those as they were lathered in the hollandaise/cheese sauce. Very disappointed with the quality of the food, we won't go back.
EDIT AS I DONT KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO THE OWNER'S RESPONSE: We had pumped ourselves up with that visit. Our youngest barely ate anything and our oldest enjoyed it except for the sauce that he described as tasteless. So as far as he was concerned the experience was great. We thought you guys were really lovely and only debriefed after we left. We are not faulting the service in ant way, you were great, but unfortunately the...
Read morePretty much never been disappointed after a meal at doner summer, they are hands down my absolute favourite restaurant in Leeds (possibly the UK) and THE ONLY 100% VEGAN RESTAURANT here.
Literally every staff member is an angel, so friendly.
The portions are absolutely GIGANTIC and cooked fresh to order quickly. Food is seasoned to perfection especially the fried chicken and salt n pepper chips - absolutely mouth watering! The in-house sauces are absolutely delectable. You HAVE to try the pickle mayo- it is literally the best dip in the whole world (even if you don’t like pickles - I hate them. It’s more like a herby dill mayo) and a match made in heaven for the honey butter, spicy, or classic coated chicken. The chicken parm and Korean bbq kebabs are supremely indulgent and delicious! If you want a lighter meal with a few more vegetables, go for a doner or garlic chilli chicken kebab option.
My partner and I have tried the majority of dishes on the menu and the only one that has been disappointing was the Caesar salad - just a little too soggy and salty! The falafel bowl is amazing though.
The only con is drinks are a little on the expensive side (mocktails are delicious but they’re similar in price to the alcoholic version), and it would be nice to have a cocktail deal. Again, burgers are a little expensive considering they don’t come with fries or a side (why it’s definitely worth going for the kebabs or fried chicken options instead). However, it’s very much worth it to support this awesome vegan...
Read moreWe first became aware of Döner Summer during their residency at YES in Manchester - so ingrained into the premises that it was a surprise and a tragedy when they finally moved on and left Manchester for ‘God’s Country’.
With them they took the BEST vegan chicken you can hope to find in the country, along with quite possibly the best vegan kebabs as well. Coated in a crispy dredge, the chicken looks to be seitan based, but with a flavourful, crunchy, and tantalising coating that gives even the most popular chicken restaurants a run for their money. Even before moving to a plant-based diet, their chicken while at YES was “so good you don’t miss the difference” for me, and now a couple years down the line it’s only gotten better.
The restaurant is a cosy venue in Leeds centre, kitted out with fairy lights, cheese plants and tables for varying group sizes.
We had 2 different styles of kebab as well as some chicken tenders and fries, all of which was absolutely top tier. The mock meat is the star of the show, with their donner, garlic chilli chicken and fried chicken being near-indistinguishable in flavour and texture from their counterparts. For any vegan missing the texture and flavour of meat, or for any plant-curious omnivores looking to dip a tow into vegan food, it’s difficult to recommend anywhere else in the...
