This Mitre be one of the best in Lincoln! We know that’s a bold statement but stay with us. The fact we managed to get the last booking of the day and that walk-ins were still showing up shows that there’s something special going on here. As to what that is exactly, we have an idea. We looked for a good half an hour on Instagram and Trip Advisor for somewhere new to try out, but also somewhere that had a table free. Eventually, Wig & Mitre said they could get us in and lucky for us, it’s barely even 2 miles from our house. We ordered our Sunday Roasts and within 20 minutes our food arrived. It looked brilliant! We got 2 massive portions of beef and there were 5 reasonable pieces of pork. There were sitting on top of our roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips and cabbage which were all topped by a sizeable Yorkshire Pudding. The gravy wasn’t gravy, it was a red wine jus, but can we just say that it was delicious. It wasn’t rich or boozy, it was light and flavourful and worked well with the dish. We also ordered a side of creamed potatoes and cauliflower cheese. Again, there were no issues with either of these. There was just the right amount to cater for the two of us, but if you’re hoping it with do 3 or 4 people, you’ll have to order extra. Overall, we had a great time at the Wig & Mitre. We were well looked after by the staff and the food left a lasting impression on us. There was literally no issues with anything. Best Sunday Lunch in Lincoln? It’s up there in the Top 3 that we’ve ever had.

When my wife and I travel, the culture, ambiance and food are all part of what make up our experience and this place checks every box and then some! Betty and Chris just operate a great pub near the Cathedral in Lincoln. GREAT ambiance, excellent food, exceptional service, cask ales, great wine and fun cocktails. We were in Lincoln for a week a (visiting choir at the Cathedral) and were so happy to discover the Wig and Mitre. The last time I was in Lincoln was in 2009 and this place has grown leaps and bounds. Locals frequent this pub for a reason and just meeting with people and hearing their story was special. We got to know the proprietors over the week and we were in for at least a pint every day. I recommend the soufflé, ham hock starter, the mussels and whatever the Chef has on special. I can't recommend this establishment more highly. My advice would be to talk to Chris and Betty or anyone else working there (Luke or Ollie were there throughout the week as well) and your experience will be something special. We also happened to be there during the 40's weekend and they booked an excellent singer (we ate and danced for hours). This place has been my best experience in the UK by far and if we lived in Lincoln it would be our daily pub!

Poor quality food, building cold, January Sales offer scam. I would have eaten in the city centre but decided to walk up Steep Hill and check out Wig & Mitre January Sale offers on their A-board blocking the footpath. Somewhat confusing. One side of the A-board main courses £10, the other side selected lunch time offers £8. When I last visited for a drink some months ago, empty, not today, busy, or at least had been busy, from the evidence of the dirty uncleared tables. It must be the lunch time offers enticing them in. As I walked in, I noticed tables were dirty, had not been cleared of dirty dishes. I waited at the bar whilst drinks were ordered. I then asked of the offers. Barman rattled off less than half a dozen items, muttered terms and conditions, then brought me a board that listed the very limited offer. He had obviously been briefed, should a potential customer question the scam. A scam. Does not include everything on the main menu. I was also told get my order in, kitchen closed in ten minutes. Outside it said open all day. That evening I checked on-line, kitchen open all day. Scam.very restricted offer. Steak? No. Bangers and mash on the main menu a little over ten pounds. The same was true of the lunch time offers, only a few pence more than the offer price. At this point, once it was obvious it was a scam, I should have turned on my heels and walked out. I was at the bar several minutes. Whilst there, I noticed the door to the kitchen was open, sitting there an order of fish and chips. I asked for a table by the window to be cleared. I was directed to a table in the gloomy interior. Barman cleared a table. Apologised. Said he was the only one on. Serving drinks, taking orders, serving tables, cleaning tables. My order of scampi and chips arrived within minutes. Disgusting. On a par with a greasy spoon cafe, only a greasy spoon cafe would have been cheaper and better quality. Frozen peas, poor quality chips, very poor quality fake scampi. Served on a cold plate. The restaurant was cold. The WiFi was blocked by the security on my phone, not secure, an untrustworthy connection. Flipping through the drinks menu, no cocktails. Maybe for the better, as most bars and restaurants are clueless on cocktails. The only positive. A lovely old building. A chain and it shows. Begs the question, is this January Sales scam running across the chain? There are far better places to eat local to the Wig & Mitre. What would have happened if a group of people had sat down, ordered steak and chips, then when eaten, presented with a bill for the full price on the menu, not as they expected, ten pounds each? I would have refused to pay. I was wise enough to question the offer before ordering, but not wise enough once the scam exposed to turn on my heels and walk out. Had I walked out, at least I would have been spared the disgusting scampi and chips. The start of the New Year has seen many pubs and restaurants close. With the abysmal low standards of the Wig & Mitre it is easy to see why. The only suprise is that they remain open for business. --- update --- It is bad enough, poor quality food and service and a scam. To lie about the scam makes it worse. The large A-Board outside illegally blocking the footpath made no mention of terms & conditions on the offer displayed. I was wise enough to ask. Immediately 'terms & conditions' as though briefed or had many complaints, a small board was produced displaying a very restricted offer. There were no posters displayed. There are far better places to eat nearby, where they care about what they serve, care about service. --- update --- RedCat, the pubco that owns the Wig & Mitre, has called in administrators.

Lovely little cafe and very well situated less than a 2 minute walk from Lincoln Castle and cathedral with many other cafe's and shops around it many interesting things to do in the surrounding area. The customer service was great the gentleman server was very cheery and always had a smile which is always a good start, 2 meals ordered one full english and second meal being eggs on toast, I will start with the second meal- presentation was fantastic and seasoned well but eggs where very much under cooked which is not the most attractive thing to have on your plate, as for the full english as anyone can imagine this ain't a plate that comes with fantastic presentation and the food it's self was good but one having one sausage but three rashers of bacon confused me as it seemed to leave the plate a bit uneven but much to my disgust I also found 2 very long hairs on my plate as I was eating that really put me off eating any further. The three star rating comes mostly from the server and the decor of the cafe having a warm rustic feel to it, what was ate of the food was good but there is many rosette awards on the wall but none for many years and I feel it may be time for the cafe to possibly pick up the standards again or take them off the wall so people are under no false illusions about what to expect

My husband has been diagnosed with diverticulitis. He is experiencing a flare up and has to eat bland but tasty food. Today we needed lunch on our way to Hull from Peterborough. We chose the Wig and Mitre because they had a fish dish on the menu and I liked the sound of the vegetarian option. My husband explained to Richard, the barman, that he needed plain fish and mashed potatoes with gravy. The chef, Fletcher, offered him grilled haddock with mashed potato and cauliflower. Richard apologised for the lack of colour in the dish but my husband was delighted with his meal. It was tasty but unlikely to irritate the inflammation. I chose the Turmeric-Roasted Cauliflower Steak with spiced potatoes, chimichurri, pomegranate seeds & harissa coconut yoghurt. This was amazing. The ‘steak’ was huge but well cooked. The combination of tastes, textures and colours was delicious and satisfying. For dessert, I had Coconut and Lime Panna Cotta, with mixed fruit compote, biscotti & mint. The biscotti was a little hard so I soaked it in the compote. The panna cotta was soft and wobbly with a mild coconut taste. The compote was sweet and sharp. It was lovely to have a dessert that was created in the kitchen, not bought in.

I'm awarding three stars as I'm feeling generous. Ten plus years ago this was quite the place to be seen and I had some wild, champagne fueled, evenings here, often chatting to M and sometimes V, the owners; today it is almost embarrassing. I cringed at the service, the food, and the décor. Perhaps they forgot today was a bank holiday Monday and only rota'd the normal Monday staff. It was busy at lunch and the only member of staff front of house was not embracing the challenge. The couple next to us left after their order failed to be taken (ours was taken before theirs yet they arrived before us) to which the staff member quite audibly quipped, "Leaving? Yeah, I would too!" The haddock and chips my guest ordered was average to poor. My French onion soup was too poor to merit any kind of description that would compare it to actual French onion soup. An unrivalled location but that alone should not be the laurels on which this business rests. (Photo taken before I had begun eating.)
