I recently visited the head of steam with a friend of mine as part of a pub crawl, i have lived in Liverpool for 10 years and have been in the Head of Steam a few times as a student, and after reading about it again in "The Great Liverpool Pub Crawl" by mike chapple i thought i'd pay it another visit.
Well im not sure if time has been unkind to the head of steam or its in the middle of a refurbishment but we were bitterly disappointed, the place seems to have had its heart ripped out, the wonderful middle bar that was full of rail memorabilia has all been stripped and the walls now lay bare the pool table had seen better days and only two cues were of any use, and the bar which reputedly had up to 15 real ales available at any time had only two bitters, the bar looked bereft of any ale whatsoever and im glad i only ordered a half pint as it was mediocre at best not even retaining its head. if its true and the bar is in the middle of a refit then this review will be somewhat redundant when its finished but if this is the current state of the place then its sad to see the place in its current state. considering its past glory and the money sunk into it to make it that way. Until it gets sorted out i suggest you visit other pubs nearby which give a much better impression of Liverpool pubs if you just got...
Read moreThe Head of Steam in Liverpool is a fantastic spot for anyone who enjoys quality beer in a relaxed, stylish setting. Located just a short walk from Lime Street Station, it’s the perfect place to unwind after work or start a night out.
The beer selection is the main attraction here. They offer an impressive and regularly rotating range of craft beers, real ales, and international brews. Whether you’re into bold IPAs, smooth stouts, fruity sours, or crisp lagers, you’ll find something that suits your taste. I tried a local pale ale and a German pilsner—both were fresh, full of flavour, and expertly poured.
What really stood out was the knowledge and friendliness of the staff. They’re more than happy to guide you through the menu or offer a taster before you commit. The bar also has a warm, modern interior with industrial touches, giving it a welcoming yet contemporary feel.
With great beer, helpful staff, and a buzzing but comfortable atmosphere, The Head of Steam is a must-visit for beer lovers in Liverpool. Whether you’re a seasoned craft drinker or just curious to try something new, this place...
Read moreI've been here a few times before and it's usually a really nice place to visit with a great selection of beers. Today was the first time I've visited post lockdown, and I'm aware service has changed everywhere with social distancing requirements, but after we signed in, were directed to a table and told it would be table service only, we were abandoned. We were at the front part of the building, which feels quite separate to the main bar, and noone was checking other than for new arrivals. I saw other people going up to the bar to order, which I tried but couldn't get anyone's attention. One member of staff was serving someone so I asked him to come to our table when he was free, but he kept serving other people first. An app that we could have ordered off would have solved the problem of remembering who was where and how long they'd been waiting. We left for...
