This review is specifically for The Cavern Club Beatles live tribute band show, playing regularly at The Cavern Club, Liverpool.
My partner and I have seen many great tribute bands in recent years, but recently realised we'd never seen a Beatles tribute. And so to celebrate the new year we booked to see The Cavern Club Beatles, on the first Saturday in January.
The experience was OK, but we didn't sense with this band any of the real passion for the music that is often in evidence with most tribute bands, who appear to do it as much as anything because they genuinely LOVE the music of whatever band or group it was, and the chance to play it in front of a live audience. This band was competent and dutifully played through a number of Beatles classics, but it felt like they were going through the motions, and that whoever organises this is resting somewhat lazily on the iconic name of the Cavern Club. It could have been so much more.
One of our disappointments was how much time was spent on stage. With a supporting act who later joined the band to "add the bits the band couldn't play" (their words, ish!), the Beatles started around 8.45, finishing just before 11.30. That may sound like a lot, but they took not one but TWO breaks; these were long, and before each segment of the set, time was filled with a video show on a large screen at the back of the stage of bits of musical (and other) history from the time. This felt like cheap padding - we'd come to see a band play! And there is no shortage of well-known Beatles tracks to play. With a tribute band, the best ones deliver 'suspension of disbelief' (that this is not the actual band playing) and the Beatles were never on stage with a video screen behind them! It just detracted and made it all feel more commercial, a slick money-making machine.
And so it was a workman-like performance, doing what they had to - play Beatles songs and dress in appropriate costumes - but the passion wasn't there, and so we felt we didn't connect with the band or the experience; we weren't drawn in, we simply watched a performance. Does that makes sense? The best and most authentic look was the guy playing John Lennon, he did look pretty good! 'Paul' however looked nothing like the real Paul, and in particular needs to lose weight(!) - tbh that spoiled the look.
All in all, we felt this was a missed opportunity to do something truly great, in the legendary early home of the Beatles. It just felt like everything was coasting on the 'brand strength' of the Cavern Club. Even the room and stage where they do these shows felt tired and uncared for; the adjacent club/bar area (it also had its own live band that night) - which you can freely wander into with your hand stamped during those lengthy breaks - felt much more authentic Cavern Club with its rows of brick arches. We're now going in search of a truly great Beatles tribute band...
The Cavern Club is one of the most iconic music venues in the world and an essential stop for anyone visiting Liverpool — especially if you’re a Beatles fan or a lover of live music. Nestled on Mathew Street in the city’s famous Cavern Quarter, the club is a living tribute to the birthplace of the Merseybeat and the global phenomenon that followed.
Walking down the steps into The Cavern feels like stepping into musical history. The underground, brick-arched cellar has been lovingly restored using bricks from the original club, giving it an authentic, atmospheric feel. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the buzz of excitement and the sound of live music — a tradition this venue has upheld for decades.
The Beatles famously performed here 292 times between 1961 and 1963, and while the original venue was demolished in the ’70s, today’s Cavern Club carries its spirit forward with passion and pride. Beatles memorabilia, vintage posters, signed guitars, and wall displays give visitors a sense of the legacy that lives on here. You’ll also find references to other legendary acts that played at The Cavern, including The Rolling Stones, Queen, Elton John, and Adele.
The stage hosts performances all day long, from acoustic Beatles tributes and solo singer-songwriters to full evening rock bands. The sound system is top-notch for such an intimate venue, and the energy from the performers and crowd is contagious. Everyone is welcome — tourists, locals, music lovers of all ages — and it’s heartwarming to see strangers unite over timeless music.
The drinks are affordable, the staff is friendly, and there’s even a gift shop for Cavern and Beatles souvenirs. You can sit, stand, dance, or just absorb the energy. It’s not a posh or polished experience, and that’s exactly what makes it so special — it’s real, raw, and full of soul.
Whether you’re looking to retrace The Beatles’ steps, catch excellent live music, or simply feel part of something legendary, The Cavern Club won’t disappoint. It’s more than a venue — it’s a Liverpool institution, a cultural treasure, and one of the most genuine music experiences you can have in the UK.

Excellent place full of charm to be an icon of many musical groups and especially the Beatles in Liverpool. It very good atmosphere and the groups that play at the height of the premises. Drinks are well priced and charge an entry of 2.5 pounds that makes the place not a hotbed of curious people who want to see it and nothing more. It is located on a -3 floor, excellent sound and a variety of drinks. The staff very attentive. We are very satisfied and will return in the future. Definitely a recommended place to listen to live music and have a drink and learn about the history of many artists who passed by.
