I've been wanting to come here for quite a while. It's not difficult to get a reservation; you can book a spot a week in advance for the weekend.
This restaurant offers a fusion of Japanese and Italian cuisine and only has a kaiseki menu. We also added sparkling wine and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as A5 wagyu beef that was available that day. The total cost was £230.
🍴The finger food consisted of three dishes: two cold and one hot. I personally liked the hot venison tartare with caviar, which blended well together. The combination of watermelon and fried chicken was innovative but didn't quite hit the mark for me—the watermelon was too sweet and juicy, which didn't pair well with the salty and crispy fried chicken. The mussel dish was mediocre.
🍴The chawanmushi appetizer was delicious, with tender and fragrant egg custard paired perfectly with fish roe, oil-marinated tomatoes, and peas. The wagyu beef was prepared tataki-style and was tasty, with tender meat that had a milky aroma. The wasabi seeds and vinaigrette complemented it well.
🍴The crudo was somewhat average, with the sea bream served warm instead of cold, which was odd. The tomato and peach cold dish was quite unique, especially with the sauce underneath! The roasted focaccia bread served with three dips was also superb, particularly the pistachio tofu dip!
🍴The pasta was homemade Italian dumplings, with both the filling and the sauce being vegetarian. Their seasoning was novel and tasty, and the crispy chicken skin added a nice touch of animal fat flavor. Unfortunately, the dumpling skins were too tough, indicating that the cooking time was not well-controlled.
🍴The main course, quail leg, was the best of the meal. It had a wonderful charcoal aroma, and the pickled cucumber underneath did not overpower it. The quail liver pate and the milky bread served with it were truly delicious.
🍴The best dessert was the ice cream with miso crumble! However, the chocolate steamed cake with yogurt cream was too strange, especially since the cream was warm instead of cold, giving it an off-putting taste as if the cream had gone bad. The matcha cream-filled dessert tasted like a canelé but lacked the canelé's shape, probably because they didn't have the mold. Similarly, the matcha cream wasn't cold enough.
📝We sat at the counter this time, observing the entire kitchen operation and the plating process, which was a bit chaotic and could be improved. Nonetheless, considering the price and the quality of the food, I was...
Read moreWe did the 10 course meal here for £59. Overall, the service and whole experience was extremely disappointing.
The 10 course menu consisted of a variety of small plates that didn't complement each other well. The flavours and components of the dishes themselves were random. For example, a chicken thigh topped with fish roe with a soft boiled egg with parm and asparagus. Just because you add fish roe and a soft boiled egg, doesn't make it "Japanese fusion." Instead, it felt like random pairings that did not go well with one another at all. It was confusing and a lazy attempt at "fusion."
What really brought down the entire evening was the exceptionally terrible service. The service and ambience were not up to a standard you would expect from a finer restaurant. To start, we were sat at a table tucked away in a corner that made it impossible for the waitress to place our dishes without going over our heads and reaching across us. If this was the case, they should not place a table there. The light was also broken above us, which mean we were seated in the dark. Why you would still seat customers there and not fix the light, I'm really not sure.
We asked for a few more candles lit and we were met with unhelpful cold service. The music they were playing did not match the cosy vibe they were going for.
Throughout our dinner, we were not asked about our experience or what we thought of the food as you would normally expect. It was as if they had no care at all.
Our main server was rude and served the plates in a hurry without much explanation or care. We had about 3 servers that night, none of which were able to address the crushed crab shell pieces we found in our food.
Needless to say, I won't be back. It's really not acceptable to offer a 10-course menu and not commit to delivering service reflective of what should've been, a special occasion.
We didn't leave service charge and no one seemed to care enough to ask why. It's unfortunate that, because of the location, the way the shopfront looks on the outside, the calibre of neighbouring restaurants, many will try this place unknowingly. Really, it's a place with ok food and bad...
Read moreMy husband & I had really high hopes for this restaurant. We saw such amazing reviews about food and the fusion of japanese and italian but it is really not that impressing.
It is advertised as a 10 course meal but actually it’s like 7 amuse bouches and the mains were a small ravioli (which tasted really nice but just too small portion and a very small piece of lamb which even in the michelin stars restaurants we wents and paid same price as Angelina we were served much more food even when just 7 courses! We also got wine pairing but this again the wines had nothing to do with the food and seemed like cheap wines from Italy tbh so no don’t get the wine pairing (£55)
The first 3 starter breads and and the tuna cracker were actually good and set the tone for the dinner..
But.. then came the “fish” starters which were bland in flavour and not seasoned enough! Magic tomato was just frozen and the fruit dish was just weird combination with the sauce..
Butterfish Nori was just too oily and no taste really but the zucchini flower was quite good probably our fav in the 10 course
Langoustine ravioli was good but only one really small ravioli per person and lamb tarako was ok but ahain really tiny for a main !
The desert was ok something I could have bought from the supermarket!!
Angelina restaurant felt more like tapas restaurant and quite a lot of small plates even for our mains which I found ridiculous! Felt bad about paying so much for these snacks like dishes! Luckily our main waiter was amazing and super nice but sometimes some other guy would bring the food and he just forgot what a lot of the dishes.
We paid £125 per person because of wine pairing £55 and extras for langoustine£35 and £5 for caviar!!
For a 1* michelin star we would have paid approximately the same :( like galvin la chapelle , glub gascon or robuchon are much much better options guys if you want actual good food and...
