Humiliating experience on Sunday 1st September 2024 at around 7:20pm. This used to be one of our favourite pubs any time of year but recently something has changed for the worse. My sister and I sat in the library room, it was hot so most customers were outside. We bought drinks and were told to wait 10 minutes before ordering food as the kitchen was overwhelmed. We duly waited whilst another customer ordered and paid for his dinner which was odd. At some point we noticed a manic lady with straggling long dark hair eyeballing our table and tramping back and forth in and out of the bar. A few minutes later the duty manager came to advise us we cannot sit at the table as the room was reserved, despite there being three large empty tables. He did not communicate this to existing customers which included two young lads who also strolled in after us. He explained that the table was reserved but on Sundays reservation cards are not placed at the tables. The polite but inexperienced bar staff had not been made aware that the table was reserved. It made no sense. We refused to leave as we had just bought drinks and a bar snack. I was really shocked and alarmed at this behaviour and wondered what was happening. In the end he relented and told us someone would take our order. It was unacceptable, humiliating and unnecessary. I intend to not return to this pub which was once our family’s favorite spot. The Cricketers, The Goat and Botanist are in close proximity. A relaxing drink in The Cricketers made...
Read moreIf I could stay here forever, I would. This place is so cute, and the customer service is excellent. Everything is clean and updated, the bed is comfy & they offer complimentary coffee, tea & homemade biscuits in our room. The mini fridge is STOCKED & while some items require payment, they are not too expensive (ex: Popcorn is less than I'd pay for it at Tesco or similar.) Breakfast in bed is £17.50 even for a Full Monty. It was delicious.
We had an excellent dinner upon arrival. My fiance had the trout with Broccolini & and potatoes. I had the dry aged steak with thick fries & a side of broccolini as well. Everything was cooked perfectly, we had two drinks & paid £61 which I thought was a great deal, especially given the large portions.
The bathroom has full-size hand soap, body lotion, bubble bath, shampoo, and conditioner, and they actually smell good & FEEL good. The bath tub is actually large enough for me to submerge my entire body (I'm 5'10") instead of either my upper body or my lower body. It was so nice to get warm after traveling in the cold weather (it was ~3⁰C/37⁰F upon arrival).
The location is great, right across from a big pretty church and small grassy parks. It's also right near Kew Gardens for anyone looking to do a bit of tourism (like me).
Overall, this little place makes big efforts to make you feel at home for an affordable price. 10/10 would recommend and will definitely stay here again when we...
Read moreAfter a couple hours exploring Kew Gardens on March 16th, were ready for a Sunday Roast. Google Maps showed the Couch & Horses nearby, good reviews: booked! When we arrived early for our reservation, we were given a table in the back. Nice as it is, it had quite a few children: a problem for someone with hearing issues. We asked our server, Mary, if there was any chance of the smaller room in front. She immediately went to her manager, they checked tables, and came back: if we could wait five minutes... The Library Room at the front was perfect! With only a few tables, natural light coming in from the park in front, we could relax much more. Mary made sure we were comfortable, and let us settle in to consider the Sunday Roast options, drink choices. One of us had the roast beef Sunday Roast with a draft beer. The other had the pork belly with cider. Both were very good - but to us the pork belly was juicier & more flavorful. Good value, lovely experience, excellent staff! Definitely worth a visit and especially if visiting Kew Gardens. After lunch we went down to the Thames for a beautiful sunny Sunday walk. Exactly how a Sunday should be, thanks to the thoughtfulness of...
