This is a place that is trying in so many ways. Its trying to be good, it's trying to have a buzz and vibe, but sadly most of all it's just trying as a customer to be in here.
Inexperienced staff with little grasp of the menu for food and drinks try hard and with a little encouragement and understanding as a customer you can help them gain a little confidence in what they are doing, but a little thought in the process is needed. For example, the drinks menu suggests if you want wine to ask for details, but there is no separate wine list and the staff seemed to struggle to distinguish between white or red.
The food is trying to bring the flavours of New York to East London, its close but having had some of the very best pie the big apple can thrown at you, it still misses the mark. I'd be interested to know how long dough is proved for and the type of flour used as it lacks the depth of flavour that Santi pizzas give you, or the morish burnt chewy sourdough of Franco Manca. There needs to be more options to order extra toppings too.
"Crispy" hawt wings were on fire in terms of chilli heat (seriously impressive) but seriously let down by the flaccid texture and complete lack of any crunch. Maybe leave the sauce on the side to dip in.
A beef hotdog was presented well but the roll needed to be fresher, with just too much dryness to it to be called great, however the frankfurter was cooked well.
Atmosphere is also seriously lacking in here, a few token screens showing the same cricket, I would have thought there would be more option. Racing on one screen, cricket another, a random weird sport from the outer edge of nowhere on another. It's a big space and it's hard to fill and that is everything about this place in a nutshell. The effort is largely "just enough". I fear this will be yet another East Village failure with nothing really to encourage repeat visits and certainly we...
Read moreEDIT: We love Dough Daddy - we've been multiple times over the years @amd have introduced other to it - but they need to sort out 3 things:
Cleanliness. Some dusting wouldn't go amiss. Multiple cobwebs spotted up in corners on our last visit. Also my daughter spilt some cordial on the ground, when she wiped it up, the napkin was brown. I don't know how often they clean, but I feel it needs to be stepped up. Similarly...
The Toilets. I can only speak for the men's, obviously - but they need to pay more attention to stock levels of consumables (soap & hand towels) and clean more often/thoroughly (the sink looked dirty).
Lastly, the staff need to be taught the difference between soda water (free) and tonic water (not free). Twice we've had soda water (at the staff suggestion) and twice we've been charged for Tonic water. The first time I mentioned it and the lady who served us was rightfully overruled and the bill was amended. The second time the guy who overruled her the first time round wasn't there so I paid £5 plus for 2 soda water/cordials for the kids that should've been more like £1.
Original review follows and I stand by it. They just need to work on the few points above -
This place was great! Added it to my list of places to visit as soon as I discovered it was a thing and was able to get there soon after. We had the Bleeker St BBQ Meat Feast pizza and it was great. Shared between myself and my two kids - it was more than enough. Reasonably priced, nice staff (although they need to be a bit more attentive - I had to ask for a couple of things that probably should've gone without saying) and a great place to watch football on big screens (we were there for a 2:00pm KO on a Sunday and there was hardly anyone there - I imagine it will be heaving during the World Cup, hopefully the service/wait times are not too bad). Will...
Read moreThe most shocking experience - although having more staff than customers it took 40 minutes of wait before I had to prompt staff that we didn’t have our order, leading to a rude exchange where I was made to recite a full order for 6 as the server wasn’t willing to review the orders himself. Following this we then wait another 15 minutes as food comes through barely cooked, with the food we did receive being cold. We eventually received half of our order, and after an hour and a half decide enough is enough that we would pay for the food we had eaten and just go - a decision clearly not liked by the main front of house lead who decides to blame use for not “telling him that our food was waiting g for us” and “not letting him know” that he hadn’t provided us with half the meal (although we had chased the meal by this point when he clearly hadn’t put it through). An unfortunate end to the night then follows as his rude reactions and refusal to remove any part of the bill that we hadn’t received and ignoring us until we made full payment - which wasn’t going to happen. Luckily the remaining members of staff eventually took over from him and I was happy to pay for the food we had, more so out of me wanting to support a new local business, not that they deserved anything during...
