Quite nice food, went here with my wife who was recommended the place by some of her friends. It’s a northeastern Chinese restaurant and certain their Northeastern cuisine was the best.
I’ve had the good fortune to work and live in China over the years (not just in Shanghai or Beijing like most).
Having said that we paid £80 including the service charge. Got sweet & sour pork (£12.80) lamb skewers (£3.60 each), crystal noodles with mixed veg (£13.80), Xinjiang sauté spicy chicken (£15.80), Dumplings (£16.80), some tea and beer, they also gave us a free dish of spicy lamb bones and watermelon.
If I were to rank them between my English tastes and my wife’s native mainland tastes. The three dishes we’d get again are the sweet & sour/lamb bone and crystal noodle veg and lamb skewers they all tasted very good, very northern (especially the skewers with beer). The melon was also quite refreshing.
The Xinjiang dish had flavour but couldn’t match native Xinjiang restaurants, the dumplings were also nice but couldn’t compare to dumpling houses.
On the balance it’s a good restaurant. Not outrageously good at everything like some claim but the dishes are good and some exceptional. It’s surprising other Chinese restaurants see more footfall from English, as I think my fellows would like the food there and the price.
The portion sizes are big (which matches the northeastern reputation for big portions and low prices). We ended up taking every dish back in Tupperware as we got too much food hahaha.
I hope the restaurant continues to prosper, continues to provide good food and good prices with good quality. As long as it does we will be sure to pop in for a meal when we are...
Read moreAuthentic Chinese cuisine from Northeast China. It is a rare find in Greenwich. Thanks to my local Chinese friend for introducing me, I really enjoyed the food. Upon entering the restaurant, we were welcomed by the shop owner who is originally from Northeast China. There is a very good selection of food:
Barbecue dishes such as Chuan, which is similar to skewer and is regarded as typical northeast food originated in the Xinjiang region of China. We had Lamb Chuan, pig trotter barbecue. There are quite a range of vegetable choices for barbecue too, such as enoki mushroom, aubergine.
Cold dishes: we had 7-colour salad with sesame source. It is a typical northeast food with finely sliced cucumber, carrot, fried egg sheet sliced, stir-fried pork sliced, black jelly fungi, green pea powder made glass noodle. It has a big portion which is very typical for northeast dish. We also ordered black jelly fungi salad, which is perfect to go with the meat dishes we ordered.
We have not got a chance to try other hot dishes, but the selection is really nice. Already looking forward to my next trip to...
Read moreUnderwhelming and tasteless food. And on the pricey side too for what it was. Ordered Crispy Shredded Beef £8.80 and it was bland and gloopy. Quite literally tasted of nothing which is pretty impressive in itself. Considered ordering Egg Fried Rice as a side but at £5.50! decided to opt for plain boiled rice.
My other issue is they don’t take card. There is no excuse in 2020, especially during Covid times, not to take cards. I’m always suspicious of places when card payment is not an option. Pretty much everywhere takes card payments these days. If you’re not taking card payments you’re a dinosaur.
Hot Pot, which looks like their speciality, looked interesting on the menu so I would possibly try that but I definitely wouldn’t rush back.
I understand times are tough for restaurants and I don’t make a point of leaving bad reviews but I couldn’t let this one lie....
