I stayed there for 2 weeks and it was bad for many reasons. 1) The hotel is filthy: During the 2 weeks cleaners didn’t clean my room even once. It was dirty already when I arrived: dirt on windowsill, a lot of mould in the shower, minor dirt on bed sheets. The room is lined with a fitted carpet (so gross by definition!) which wasn’t even thoroughly hoovered. I arrived on Friday. By Tuesday the bins in my room were overflowing. No one empties the bins or gives you toilet paper or new towels unless you explicitly ask or put your full bin in the corridor. They do absolute bare minimum. I also saw a cleaner putting fresh towels on the filthy floor in the corridor. A second set of towels I got was smelly. The stairwell is never hoovered. Needless to say the cleaner never refilled my tea/coffee supplies. My bedsheets were not changed at all. 2) Facilities: a) when I arrived there was no toilet paper in the room and the bathroom light was broken – it doesn’t switch off. I went to the pub to ask. I got a toilet roll and was told to that the cleaner would bring more on Monday but this didn’t happen. The light, I was told, was broken. No explanation why and when it’d be fixed. So I needed to sleep with the bathroom light on at night for 2 weeks. The bathroom fan doesn’t work. b) There’s no proper wifi. There’s only Pub’s feeble connection that most of the time doesn’t work (and is insecure). I had to buy extra data bundle on my phone to use it as a hotspot. c) There’s a kettle covered in lime but there are no sockets anywhere near the kettle so you need to use at the night table stand d) they don’t even provide a glass to put your toothbrush in e) thoughtless arrangements: there’s a mirror but it’s nowhere near a socket that you could use for drying/styling hair f) there’s a desk but there’s no desk chair, only an armchair, so it’s impossible to use the desk for any work g) there’s no proper wardrobe so and very few hangers. One of the hanger is broken – I hurt myself with it and slashed my wrist with it – perhaps this is left on purpose for unhappy guests. 3) terrible customer service and communication: a) since I saw a few reviews complaining that there’s no kettle in the room I emailed the hotel several times to ask about it. I sent around 5 emails/booking.com messages. I’ve never heard back so I bought a travel kettle with me. This extra cost could be avoided if they had replied to me. B) I was asked to pay before even seeing the room. C) I was told I’d be emailed the invoice. I wasn’t. My email remained unanswered. Eventually I had to go the pub and ask for a printout (and toilet paper!). The printout wasn’t even a proper invoice, just details of my reservation. Thank God my company refunded me based on that (over £2500!!). D) Booking.com description doesn’t inform you that the hotel is above a pub so get ready for noisy nights. You’re informed about it only once you’ve put the booking through! Fortunately, they pub closes at 11pm and it’s quite by 11.20pm. Monday-Thursday are quieter. Positives: it’s an excellent location if you need to access Salvation Army buildings or the hospitals. There are convenient connections to many central locations.

The George Canning reopened on Wednesday 25 August after a major refurbishment. I am pleased to report that they have started serving real ale again. Two cask beers on handpump when I visited: Doom Bar and Timothy Taylor's Landlord. And the Landlord is a bargain at £3.35 for a pint. Lots of outdoor seating most of it covered. Four screens showing sport. Very friendly and helpful staff.

What can i say about this pub. Fantastic pretty much sums up my experience. Firstly the staff were very polite and friendly and the pub is well organised and maintained to a high standard. The selection of beers wines was good and a home chutney went down well with some cheese and biscuits. Music was very good and they played whatever we ask for and only a short walk to the station.

The young woman working behind the bar during the womens euros final this evening was extremely rude. When I asked her for a soda water (after having already bought several other drinks) she abruptly pointed at a bottle of tap water and said "its there" when I said that I would please like soda water, she rolled her eyes huffed, filled a glass half way with soda and then slammed it down, it was so rude and abrupt, I said "Im sorry did I do something to offend you" and she told me that someone else was ahead of me in the queue, I apologised and said I didn't realise that the person on the other end of the bar was waiting as they were chatting to someone else and that she could have absolutely told me to wait and serve them first, she then again rolled her eyes and huffed at me before making a derogatory remarks under her breath, I then asked her if she could please explain what I done to upset her, she completely ignored more, I then asked again if she would politely tell me what id done wrong and she pretended as if i wasn't there and was extremely rude, she then went about being extremely hostile to me and my friends despite us paying for several rounds of drinks, there was no manager or anyone else on site to speak to. Ruined a really great night of football due to extremely poor and unacceptable customer service. Will not...

Stayed here for a Saturday night in May. Arrived just after 3pm, which was check-in time, only to find that the room hadn't been cleared, so had to wait another 30 mins to check in which was frustrating, given that we had an appointment locally.

Were given a lemonade to drink whilst waiting. Friendly staff behind the counter, but no explanation as to what was going on.

Finally got to the room, dropped bags and left. Noticed that there was a rubbish bin with someone else's rubbish left on the table which wasn't pleasant.

Returned later that night to discover that the the light in the bathroom would not switch off, nor the extractor fan, so it was loud and bright all night and frustrating it just never switched off all night! Didn't sleep at all because of this, nor was there anyone to ask for assistance.

Checked out the next morning, but it wasn't clear what the procedure should be - where to leave the key card? The pub itself was closed, so just left it inside the front door. Felt a little odd.

Also noticed that people had been smoking in the guest rooms, it stank of smoke and there were empty cigarette packets laying on...
