On the day I went in I was ā€œgreetedā€ by arrogant, uncommunicative staff too busy looking at their phones to serve you with any kind of civility. They didn’t even bring the coffee or the food to the table when it was not busy and harder not to do it than actually do it. Again they were too busy looking at their phones. A black coffee, a flat white and two small sausage rolls for Ā£18 all served with a look of distain. In fairness I saw them treat some people with dogs in a friendly manner, which was nice to see, just not some of the human customers, and the sausage rolls and chutney were good, but once again a place with people working in it that seemingly couldn’t care less about their attitude. And please put your phones down and look at people when they are giving you their business and their money is paying your wages. It is just the friendly and decent thing to do. There is no pleasure in writing a bad review, but there is also no pleasure in going in to a place for a nice time and being treated like they are doing you an unwanted favour. I’m so tired of giving money to people with a terrible, unfriendly, attitude.

A while ago I had an excellent coffee at one of Shoreditch hotels. The baristas never made an eye contact or said a word - it was like being served by perfectly sleek androids. At one point I picked up a copy of CAFFEINE magazine and read an interview with the manager, who said their goal is to serve the best coffee, not to be a social hub for making friends. It was and still is a major turn-off for going back. Goswell Road Coffee is a hub for socialising, enjoying music (unless it's too loud - talk to the staff to turn down the volume dial) and people watching. Or better yet, crowd-watching and enjoying to be watched back. All that, plus some SERIOUSLY GOOD COFFEE. The manager, a young lady named Kay - yes, Kay - will give you a hug if you need one. Interactions are encouraged! What else do you need in this world if not more connections, more socialising, more kindness, more touch? Good job, Kay, and the whole team.

My local coffee shop! It’s a great place for people like me that enjoy working on the laptop in a quirky environment with brilliant coffee on offer! I can always vibe with the messages and values in this place, there is always something to keep your brain occupied in here whether that be the neon lights, Boris bands, reading the C**T mugs or trying out all the different sofas haha! This is the most unique coffee shop you will find in London, I have been coming here for my Vanilla Latte’s for over 6 years and have not found a better vibe anywhere else. The staff are brilliant and are always on hand. The sofas are great and the high ceilings really add to the shops character. If you are ever on Goswell Road and find yourself googling ā€˜good coffee near me’ head here ASAP. I’ve visited this coffee shop a few times over the years, especially as a student, and always appreciated the lovely dĆ©cor and calm space to read or get some work done. However, my most recent visit left me quite disappointed.

I went on a weekend with a friend to work on our laptops, and while there’s no stated policy against laptop use, the music was extremely loud—beyond background level. We kindly asked the staff if they could lower it slightly. They did at first, which I appreciated, but only five minutes later it was turned right back up to the same high volume, which felt quite dismissive.

It’s not that I expect silence in a coffee shop (part of the charm is the atmosphere) but this felt more like a bar than a cafĆ©. If they had simply told us they preferred to keep the music at that level, I would’ve understood. What I found disappointing was being told yes, then having the volume turned up again so soon after.

The drinks and food are fine, but for me, the overall ambience and feeling welcomed as a customer matter just as much. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll...

I am in shock. This used to be my favourite cafe in this area. It used to be so cool, the staff was great, I had bought some of the merch and was a huge fan. Also - Great coffee btw… I came here to have a pastry and a coffee and do an hours works with my laptop but I simply could not endure being in here, I really tried but its just so so so so awful. This is not the cafe with chill and cool vibe that it used to be. 3pm on a Tuesday - they are playing music super loud, basically like a club (not exaggerating) - my apple watch was sending me hearing warning notifications. The ā€œmusicā€ is also a form of torture - it was a PITBULL playlist, like the shittiest ā€œmusicā€ one could ever imagine. You couldn’t find a space to sit before and now it’s super empty - no wonder! They cannot be possibly enjoying this I almost think its to scare people away. It is AWFUL, I am genuinely heartbroken over how they have turned one of my fav cafes in London to this… Its sad! I had to leave this...
