This was my first time visiting the Great India after hearing high praise about its fabulous food and excellent service from my older family members. This is a family run restaurant that has been around since 1958. The interior is very nicely laid out, with elegant tables. It has a private but sophisticated feel as there is a small number of tables and you often have to book in advance. Luckily we managed to walk-in and get a table for 4 when it was not too busy. The gentleman who waited on us the entirety of our time was called Milan. He was very poised and hospitable. Amongst the 4 of us, we ordered a range of vegetarian and meat dishes. I recommend paying to have the Poppadoms and Chutneys as they were excellent and a great way to whet the palate before your main meal. Their mango chutney was outstanding and very addictive! For my dinner I had Mushroom Rice which was flavourful and savory. It's a perfect portion too, just the right amount for a substantial meal. To accompany it I ordered a Mutter Paneer side dish which is very mild and quite sweet, so I would recommend getting it with added spice if you order it. For dessert I ordered a Coconut Supreme which was an exceptional closing stanza to my meal; it's a fantastic Coconut ice cream with coconut shavings inside and all beautifully presented in a real coconut shell! Great India is situated in the high-end area of Sloane Square/Street so their quality matches the presupposesd expectation of institutions in the area as well as their amicable hospitality. If you decide to order a starter, main, rice and dessert and drink it'll be £40-£50 per head depending on what you order. Ordering just a main + rice + drink for roughly £25 per head is more than enough to satisfy as their portion sizes are good and their dishes are as authentic as I've tasted. It's definitely a place I'd recommend for a relaxed yet...
Read moreWorst Indian Restaurant in London!! Absolutely disgraceful!! First thing first this is NOT an Indian restaurant it is a Bangladeshi restaurant disguising as Indian.. Now coming to the food.. we ordered mix platter which had onion bhajji, samosa, chicken and lamb seekhne kebab.. Lamb seekhne was dark red/maroonin colour initialy I thought it might be beet root kebab, when I asked the waiter why it is so bad he explained it has done spicy masala and colour used in it.. I mean are you serious you are saying there is artificial colour in food that you are serving me?? Then next we ordered meat samosa.. greasy and tasteless.. less said the better.. Try this in DISHOOM and you will never comeback here...
Now coming to the service.. I felt I was hounded for ordering food.. The waiter was rude and manner less.. I said can I order mains please and this was our conversation Conversation 1... after we had almost finished eating mixed platter.
Me: Can we get Meat Samosas please? Waiter: What about mains? Me: We will order it after 10-15 mins. Waiter: Disgusted expression!! Me: What's the matter is the restaurant/Kitchen closing soon? Waiter: We want order with starters mains etc all together. Me: I mean are you serious?

Read moreThis was a dinner for a family of (4). We shared (4) main courses, (2) orders of rice (suggested by our waiter who was spot on), and (2) orders of garlic naan. We are visiting and this was our only Indian food meal in London and we were very happy to find this spot. The service was excellent - very friendly staff that walked us through the menu with some suggestions (and warnings about the heat); my son and I like spicy food so he tried to order the hottest item on the menu - we were cautioned against it and got the second spiciest, which was pretty spicy and still made for a good part of the meal. We were all happy with the meal and this compared favorably to our favorite Indian restaurant in San Francisco. Our kids are teenagers, so we were pretty casually dressed which was fine. We made a last minute reservation and the place was not full when we got there, but filled before we left - suggest making a reservation if you have the time. I also saw several take-out meals moving through, so that is an option as well. Recommend - Saag paneer; Chicken vindaloo (HOT); the papadum is the best I’ve tried; garlic naan…everything we tried...
