This place has been here a lonnnnnnnnngggg time - I have been going on and off for about 20 years! When I first started it was a real bargain at £3.50 for all you can eat, time has past since then and it is now priced at £10.95 for the same deal... It's been about 10 years since I last visited, so when a friend suggested it, I was glad to revisit after such a long time. In fact stepping through the doorway was like stepping back in time - it was exactly like it was since my last visit 10 years ago, actually even since I first started coming 20 years ago! The inside is like a basic traditional cafe that you would find in India and the walls are covered in posters and signs about a vegetarian diet and others giving the health benefits of cinnamon and drinking warm water not cold. Although the signs are the same, they don't look very faded or grubby so either they give them a good cleaning or replaced regularly. We arrived just after 5pm on a Saturday afternoon. No one else was there although a few people started to trickle in later. Not much of a greeting and we pretty much helped ourselves to plates and food. There were a variety of curries, all fairly mild - however there was a lot of potato - it would have been nice to have some without, dhal (lentils), puries (small fried flat bread) and a variety or rice (pilau, brown short grain, white). Also a variety of salads - carrot, beetroot, lettuce/cucumber/tomato (the tomato didn't taste fresh though), chickpeas some chutney. There were also a few onion bhajis and some nice fried banana balls (only 3). The food overall was ok - a little disappointing though without a variation in spice levels in the curries available (and the taste of the ones available pretty same same tasting)- too much potato and food like the banana balls and bhajis were not being restocked, no papadoms or samosas or rice pudding. Saying that I did have 3 plates of food and came out feeling very full! The place was clean and it was nice to take a trip down memory lane. Great for quantity but need to do a little more to make it a quality experience that I would want to...
Read moreThis place right here, Indian Veg is the hidden gem of authentic Indian cuisine. For a meat lover like me who went in with an open heart to not expect much from a vegetarian diet, I was so so wrong. Ideally located only 3mins walk from Angel Train Station with lots of buses and along the White Chapel Market, you gotta eat here 💯
First impression... Warm, clean and friendly. Wide variety of meal options, all vegetarian with lots of healthy facts plastered all over the wall. I was amazed by some of them actually and after speaking with the owner who clearly runs the place with lots of love and passion before profits, feeding 100 homeless people daily which amounts to 700 weekly, I'm in awe. Not only do I have lots of undying respect for the owner, every single dish were mouthwatering and free from any nasties like msg. I swear down, I never ever thought I'd like vegetarian food but I'm definitely half converted after visiting Indian Veg. Put it this way, I won't be buying meat in a hurry after I use up current stack in freezer.
For a foodie like me, I couldn't manage more than 2 plates and there was no corkage fee to Bring Your Own Wine/Beer. Glasses were supplied too freely and the food supplies kept coming. Though you serve yourself but please, take small portions at a time so as to avoid wastage. Oh did I mention too that the All You Can Eat buffet is a tenner? Yep, very cheap and cheerful with quality homemade vegetarian, healthy meals. Every single person that were eating there were all friendly as we all spoke about how amazing the place was and for so little price, it should be put on the very top of The Best Places To Eat In London,...
Read moreWhen I worked at First Sport many many years ago me and a friend used to come here for lunch. We are meat eaters but the food tasted so good that we could go without and enjoy the spices with the veg.
So on returning to the area with mum I thought I'd see if she would fancy eating there as she's a west indian mum, she is fussy about where she eats and the food.
We chose our seats as it wasnt busy, got two all you can eat plates and had a little of everything on out plates. The food was still just as good if not better than all those years ago. Mum only managed one plate but I tasted the dhal and that was it! I had two more plates full mainly of dhal and rice tasted just the way Indian West Indians make it those from Trinidad and Guyana.
We also sampled a dink from their vast selection I had never seen before, Extra Malty Supermalt! Mum enjoyed it so much she took two bottles home.
The restaurant/cafe is pleasant, clean and simple, it's self-serve (hence the service rating) but the cashier is accommodating and helpful. The toilets are very clean, it's easy to imagine a market eatery to be run down and dirty inside but this place is a pleasant surprise, if there is a mess anywhere its customer created (like mum dropping her fork) rather than sloppy staff and lack of cleanliness.
I highly highly recommend a visit and sure you will be hooked, healthy, spicy, tasty food at a low cost you simply...
