I have been wanting to try Jakes for ages. Obviously discovered it a few years ago Thanks to the Eliz Line and my supermarket quests but I kept coming the wrong time when they were closed. Finally, just when I had lunch nearby it happened to be open so I had to try a burger. The owner is a super foodie like me so definitely can relate and obviously his burgers are amazing coming from someone who doesn't really eat burgers because grilled patties have a funny taste and smell from the grill while some meats stink. Dined here twice so tried the chicken, beef, lamb burgers and they were all banging. Clean, juicy patties which he makes in house so there's no chewy bits or bone fragments. Also tried the fried egg, again cooked on the same grill, the taste was clean. The shocking thing was the price, a 4oz beef burger will only set you back at £3.40. The burgers were tasty without sauces and extra garnishing but taken to the next level with the saltiness and fiery kick from English mustard inspired by another customer. Definitely the best burger and one that I ate with my bare hands. Only cheated by using a fork to put mustard on the burger and to eat the fried egg. (I happened to have a fork because I got a few from my bakery crawl earlier that day where one of the bakeries was recommended by the owner.) The owner is so inspiring and enlightening that it was a pleasure hearing about his dining experiences. Jakes Hamburgers is definitely worth trying because you can see how long it has been there, I love the neon lights and the old fashioned burger...
Read morePaid for 16 oz of beef patty, received 12 oz (365 grams) a big discrepancy and when you consider that 16 oz vs 12 oz costs £4 more you would expect to receive exactly that. When I contacted the owner, he advised that all weights advertised are pre-cooking, and so a 16 oz burger is in fact 12 oz, a 8 oz = 4 oz and so on. If I were the owner and valued the integrity of my business, I would add extra meat to account for the shrinkage, or add a disclaimer on delivery sites to inform customers of the same otherwise you are misrepresenting an item. Another piece of advice to the owner is not to dismiss a customers concerns by using the premise ‘I’ve got a reputable business and don’t receive complaints of this nature’ thus trivialising their concern. Treat each concern individually and with a helpful attitude. As for the burger, the patties contained too much flour (which is typically used as a binding agent, just less) making them very rubbery and without flavour, which left much to...
Read moreI’ve grown up around the area and have always seen Jake’s Hamburgers. Thought I’d give it a go last night and was everything I expected it to be. The shop feels like a blast in the past! I can imagine not much has changed in terms of the look inside over the past few decades which for me, I loved. Even for me as a 28 year old, so much has changed in ilford over the last 2 decades so it’s really nice to see how Jake’s had stood the test of time and a local business that has been serving the locals for over 40 years! Absolutely loved the service and heartwarming to see to elderly gentleman have a meal on a Friday night who have been customers since 1989! I hope Jake’s business carries on strong as for certain I’ll be supporting it! Food wise I ordered the 4oz blowout burger with regular chips which was immense. Amazing taste and was all cooked fresh right in front...
