I don’t know who the man was that was working in there after Maggie passed away but he desperately needed some lessons in how to provide good customer service . I used to go into Maggies sometimes with my mum after picking her up from her night shifts at the QEH. We would be greeted , find a table and the usual ladies that worked in there would come over and take our orders and your tea or coffee would be topped up throughout. If it wasn’t Maggie herself doing the topping up it was one of the lady servers . One morning we went in there and there were none of the usual lady servers in there but this one fella behind the counter . When we walked in he didn’t bother to acknowledge us. I have always known the staff to come over and take your order at your table but when we sat down, we were waiting. Instead he stood behind the counter going is anybody waiting repeatedly but never once acknowledged us or told us to come to the counter to order, but when a man walked in 5 mins after us and sat down he went straight over and served him! So we walked out and we went to chefs treat instead . We haven’t been back since and refuse to go . I don’t encourage anybody either because of him. Terrible service. It had also become pricey and on another level of trying to attract the people that have come to Lewisham through gentrification of the area and not the loyal customers who have been residents of Lewisham for a long time or born and bred in the area. It doesn’t have the same feel it did when Maggie was alive. Such a shame because we used to enjoy going there and I haven’t...
Read moreI wanted to like this place far better than I did. Their breakfast with up to 20 items for £12.95 should be a winner, but sadly I was not impressed. The proteins were all acceptable but none of the veg accompanying the breakfast were. Completely bland mushrooms, bubble, fried onions (surprise about how this is possible to be bland) and fried tomato. Nothing, and I mean nothing was properly seasoned, and as such you can't just hope to add flavour by salting it after the fact, that just makes it a salty but bland concoction. Unfortunately I let myself be led a stray and ordered more food than I could eat, and as such along with things being too bland meant a lot of food was not eaten and I didn't get great value for my money. If you have a big appetite then perhaps I could see the value of the £12.95 breakfast. I would have also rather had been given hot water and a tea bag to make my tea myself to my tastes, I wasn't expecting a cuppa with milk already added. The cafe itself is cozy and clean, the waitress did a good job. Its location near Lewisham Station makes it easy to get to. In the end it's a simple equation that quantity cannot make up for lack of quality. If they could address this by making up items worth eating then I would imagine that what's on offer would be a great value. Not worth a side trip. For me it wasn't a side trip, I traveled from Newham just to give them a try. I do like their outdoor...
Read moreI went here about 15 years ago and went today for the first time since. I went about 11.30 and ordered a variety of items from their breakfast 'all you can eat' menu. I ordered 2 sausages, 2 bacon, beans, egg, toast and a coffee whilst the person I was with ordered the same but with chips.
The food arrived literally within 1.5mins of ordering (great speed but the game was up then that all this food had been sitting in a hot holding unit). The sausages were overcooked and rock hard down one side, the bacon was black on one side, toast was floppy and luke warm, and the coffee was lumpy. The only good thing was the beans (probably because beans hold for hours in a hot holding unit). The egg wasnt at all runny and the chips soggy and warm.
I didnt complain purely due to how much I used to love it here but I am so disappointed how much it has gone down hill and all those accolades they used to get - well there is 0% chance of the number of those increasing.
The sad thing is that there is King's Diner in Downham and also a cafe next to mottingham station that are leaps and bounds tastier and also cheaper..it was just that I was in the area so thought for old time's sake I would visit Maggies
I just got the feeling that attention to detail has been completely abandoned as Maggie (who is still there handing out the teas and coffees) has gotten older -...
