For hubby’s Birthday dinner we thought we would try out a new restaurant in Ilford called Mumbai 7, recommended by his friend. The reviews, mostly by ‘invited ‘ bloggers were good. The website looked professional. Having lived in Mumbai & loving the food, I was excited to see it. The chef Nikhil Mahale opened Farzi Cafe in Gurgoan , Delhi in 2014 & after its success opened Farzi Cafe in Haymarket Central London. Great reputation & pedigree. However Mumbai 7 seems like it’s little provincial sister, in a bizarre residential area strip of shops, converted house (?) in between a Carpet shop & tyre place?!? Red carpet to greet you distracts from the potholes on the pavement lol 😆 The food was delicious & the drama of dry ice was cheesy but fun. Great for Instagram lol 😆 but nothing new . The decor is colourful & modern , like something out of ‘Changing rooms’ with a plastic green plant wall & black & white chevron floor. A decade late & clearly not durable. Only been opened 3 months but still needs finesse. The spot lights weren’t on , on our side of the restaurant, hence bad pictures lol 😆. The wall by our seat was damaged most probably from fitting the plush banquet. The toilet had a giant industrial size toilet roll on top of the cistern! Not appropriate or hygienic . The staff were lovely but when asked what we were eating 2 people couldn’t tell us. ( lack of training) The Mocktails arrived after our starters finished . We needed to ask for water , not offered it. No alcohol served in this restaurant ! Have they not got a licence yet? The paper straws disintegrated in the excessive ice. Could be catering for the local demographic but there is a sports bar across the road lol 😆 . The delivery of the food was sporadic. Received the Biryani first , very tasty & finished it before the chicken curry & naans arrived. Ok as we were sharing but would have been awkward if not. When the fatoush salad arrived , I asked if there was a dressing on it & the server didn’t know. It seemed to have nothing on it. I had to ask for lemon wedges. Even though the food was delicious, the portions were unusually small for Indian cuisine. Thankfully not Haymaket prices but portions were small - £65 for sharing starter of 12 pani puri & chaat, sev puri etc , 2 mocktails, 1 salad, 2 naans , Chicken dish & lamb Biryani. We skipped...

As a regular patron of Mumbai 7, I felt compelled to share my experience after reading the recent review from another guest. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I believe it's only fair to provide a balanced perspective.

I dined at Mumbai 7 on the same night as the guest who left the negative review. We were a table of five, seated close to their party, and had a completely different experience. The staff were incredibly attentive and helpful throughout the evening, ensuring our requests were met promptly. For instance, after placing our initial order, I requested a few additional dishes, and they were brought out quickly and without any hassle.

We were celebrating a birthday, and the team went above and beyond by bringing out a cake with candles as we had requested when making our reservation. This thoughtful gesture added a special touch to our evening.

As for the other guest’s comments about delays and lack of attention, I feel compelled to share an observation: their child was crying after bumping her head on the table, but the adults seemed more focused on taking photos than attending to her. It seemed unfair to fault the staff for not addressing a situation the parents themselves appeared to disregard.

In terms of the food, it was served hot, fresh, and in a timely manner, even during a busy Saturday evening. Mumbai 7 specialises in bold, flavourful Indian cuisine, which might not suit everyone’s palate, but I personally find it exceptional and authentic.

Regarding hygiene, I have never noticed anything concerning during my visits. The restaurant maintains a high standard of cleanliness, and the staff is always professional.

I think it’s important to recognise the effort and dedication of the team at Mumbai 7. The restaurant can get busy because it’s so popular, but the staff works tirelessly to ensure their guests have a great experience. While no place is perfect, I’ve found the management and staff approachable and open to feedback, which says a lot about their commitment to improvement.

I encourage anyone reading this to give Mumbai 7 a try. The vibrant atmosphere, delicious food, and genuine effort from the team make it a wonderful dining...

We went when we were having a sporadic storm with thunder & lightning. Due to the weather, it was very quiet but in some sense after a long week it was nice to be able to enjoy the music and catch-up with my dear friend. Also the music re-mix playlist was on point! Lovely to hear some classic tunes that had been blended remixed with new tunes...Nice! Lighting was perfect, not too low for the evening...Decor is cute and clean. Despite it being quiet, service was excellent. Staff were very welcoming when we walked in. Usually you'll find restaurants service being poor when it's quiet as floor staff relax and chat amongst themselves. But service there was fab. Having a medium range in the menu is a great idea, it may need a little tweeking as per customer requests in due time, which I saw the manager do when talking to the customers taking on board suggestions. But good because it means the dishes are perfected in training. Mocktail drinks came out and looked sooo cute and tasted gorgeous 😍. I ordered a Mumbai Dhinchaak as the ingredients are soo me! Elderflower, Pineapple, Ginger...loved it, yum! and my friend ordered a Bindas which is a refreshing lemony minty taste Mocktail. Food came out fresh and cooked well. The only two things I'd pick on is the garlic naan, I wish it was bigger in size, chunky / fluffier...it was a bit slim/thin for my liking, and portion size is a bit small for the price of each dish....those would have been the only flaw for me.

I really don't understand how people can give this place more than one star. I would have given 0 stars personally. So I went on a Saturday at 9pm and didn't have a booking but luckily there were plenty of free tables. Firstly the service was quite depressing, there was enough staff to serve all the tables but all the staff members were walking around like they hate being there. Then there was 3 of us so we ordered 3 starters and kitchen was fully staffed which we can see as it was open kitchen and there was only 5 tables seated but for some reason it took them over 30mins to bring the first starter and then the worst part was after the 1st starter came then 2nd came exactly 13 mins after and then the 3rd came exactly 7mins after, how can a restaurant even be capable of doing this and be proud of themselves. The overall quality of the starter was tasteless. Then mains came this time all at the same time luckily but wasn't worth the wait, again tasteless. Worst part was every dish that came out the first thing staff say is do you wanna record on your phone, we had to say no we don't want any pictures or videos we came to eat, The staff was so shocked that we didn't want to record all the smoke displays. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, do not fall for all the social media videos showing fancy displays etc, it's not worth the trip. food and service 0 stars.

I went to celebrate my birthday with my family this evening however I left feeling disappointed. We were the only people in the restaurant however our 5 starters came out one at a time with about 5 minutes between each one. This irritated me immensely as it is not something you expect in any restaurant, let alone one that is supposed to be finer dining than most. The food itself wasn't bad, albeit a bit bland, but the fact we had to divide each starter between 6 hungry people to keep us going was awful. I asked if we could have it all together at the start of our meal but my reply was that I don't know if we can do it. Nowhere would you expect people's starters to come out in dribs and drabs. Service was a bit pushy and the waiter was more interested in trying to get us to order more food and us getting our cameras ready for the theatricals. Atmosphere was non-existent really - even the music was very random. When I've gone to other restaurants on my birthday, a complimentary cake with a candle has been brought out - a nice little touch. No such luck here. Considering the bill came to £123, I expected more. Even with the Groupon offer, I don't think we will be back...I feel there are nicer places to spend your money. Photos and social media make it look great (as you can see from my snaps) but they are deceptive. Maybe I was just one of the unlucky ones.
