Very fond memories of The Nightingale as was. Used to frequent most Friday nights and the atmosphere was electric and you would struggle to find a place to stand let alone sit. On a recent visit (after 7 or more years away) I was surprised to see only a handful of people in there at 8 pm on a Friday night. The back of the bar was in darkness as I assume there was no need for it in the empty pub. On entering, straight to an empty bar, wait to be served and then I assume , the landlady appeared. No smile, no conversation, barely even a grunt. She was too busy desperately trying to be involved in a conversation at the end of the bar. Once the drinks were poured, a contactless machine was thrust forward, still no words not even how much the transaction was for. We walked away with our drinks, said thank you. No reply! Good pint of Guinness tho! So I went back for another only to receive the same welcome. On approaching the bar, she walked away! Came back and poured the pint with not another word, the contactless machine was presented again without a word whilst craning her neck to be involved in a conversation that as happy to continue without her! Such a shame this lovely lively pub with great bar staff in the past is now offering this experience. Unfortunately will...
Read moreThis pub is a gem, and all the better for being a recent discovery. I've been leading social bike rides through all of eastern London for a decade now, so when a missed turn on a recent trip revealed the Nightingale on the Green I was looking for an excuse to visit, as my first glance had made me hopeful that this is a place to treasure. I'm glad to report that my initial thoughts were correct. The location, on a quiet residential street by a miniature village green, is as timeless an example of rural English life as you could hope to find in a month of Sundays, the ales in perfect condition and the food delicious. I took one for the team* and ordered the vegan nut roast, and very good it was too. The staff could not have been more helpful, and the natives are friendly. As I sometimes do, I'm adding an extra 🌟 About half the people who join my social bike rides are either vegan or vegetarian, but I'm not. I'm also keen to reduce my carbon footprint, and the only area in my life where I'm not at least carbon neutral is my carnivore diet, so it was doubly useful to try the vegan option, which tasted even better than it looks in...
Read moreStopped by after reading the nice reviews. We sat quietly in the corner and had the veggie burger which was a lacklustre bun with a floppy tomato, a leaf of lettuce and a patty- with the nut ‘paella’ which wasn’t bad. Strange to read all the glowing reviews. Staff were accommodating and nice but as we left, someone said “we don’t like strangers in here”. We are an English couple, but somehow that sounds like ‘brexshiteer’ language, so we say to them, no worries you suckers, you can have it to yourselves! Shame we have to share this island with you though, you drunk,...
