Top quality glass of Japanese Sake "Dassai (Otter Festival)" from Yamaguchi Japan with an ice cube was my great experience on the hottest day in June ! Amazed by the range of top quality Japanese sake brand in this small casual local secret location you can taste. From Central London, Brixton tube station 5 mins walk or bus No.35 getting off (bus stop T) near by (from Shoreditch to Brixton) for avoiding central London busy areas. Also I loved the casual "Izakaya" or "Japanese Showa era night street stall" atmosphere here very much. This shop is a recently opened one in Brixton as one of the very popular Okan restaurant branches (not inside Brixton Village arcade, this is the 2nd branch - name is Brixton East). More spacious and relax inside than other Okan branches. Food - you can say I found authentic Japanese Okonomiyaki Osaka style here. I and my friends enjoyed taste of home. If you would like to visit "Japan in London", taste this Okonomiyaki. I also had Yaki gyoza , edamame shared with friends and cool beer in Summer evening. I recommend and also reasonable prices are great too.

We almost didn’t eat here if it weren’t for my insistence on overlooking the rigid server’s extreme ‘Japanese-ness’ in refusing to allow my mate and I to sit down and order as long as we had outside coffees in our hands. With that, we did a lap of the Brixton Market finishing our cuppas, then sat down and ordered prawn okonomiyaki and typically overpriced edamame. I can’t speak for the ramen; however, the okonomiyaki was stellar. We ordered to share, but I could have easily demoed one myself. Sizzling, authentic and tasty! Could have done without the entrée of extremely sticklerism. Glad taste prevailed in the end.

Delicious aubergine, kimchi and gyoza to start. I had the okonomiyaki special (a savoury pancake dish made of wheat flour batter with squid, prawns, kimchi and corn) as a main course - it was delicious, well cooked and shimmering with bonito flakes on top of the mayonnaise swirls. My son had ramen - a fragrant bowl of fresh ingredients. The restaurant is small and mainly consists of 2 person tables with stools, with a cooking area screened slightly from diners. Service is attentive and polite. OKAN is a great spot for an informal meal with friends (much like its sister restaurant in the market).

Not sure if they have a chef with Korean background? Saw so many good reviews here but our visit was a bit disappointing. They claimed to be a Kansai style restaurant but why kimchi???

We ordered the omelette with eel. We thought it was an omelette roll because this is supposed to be a common Japanese dish. So overpriced because the omelette turned up as a dish with shredded eel wrapped in a thin piece of ‘egg tortilla’ (at the beginning we even thought they had forgotten to add the eel, as they were so small).

Okra with crispy pork: okra tasted good but where was the crispy pork?? There were only pieces of pan fried meat.

When the server brought us the udon, we knew we were going to be disappointed again. The udon was served in Korean aluminium pot which was definitely not the Japanese would do. The udon tasted alright (not that Kansai style unfortunately), not impressive at all and the portion was small.

We ordered two Okonomiyaki: One Special (with seafood and kimchi) and one pork. I think they’d better put on a bit more mayo on the surface in order to balance the saltiness of the okonomi sauce. And it seems there was too much sauce cooked with the seafood in the Special that made the okonoyaki too wet.

Service was attentive. Meanwhile, sorry don’t think will...

Amazing OKONOMIYAKI& Outstanding Service at OKAN Brixton East

We visited OKAN Brixton East last Sunday, and I can’t express how much we loved the experience. We had the Tokyo Shoyu Ramen, and it was simply divine—rich, flavorful broth with perfectly cooked noodles. The balance of savory and umami flavors was spot on, making it one of the best bowls of ramen we’ve ever had.

What made our visit even more enjoyable was the impeccable service from our waitress, a charming Indian woman who truly stood out. She was incredibly attentive, friendly, and engaging, with a warm smile that made us feel instantly welcome. Her professionalism and ability to anticipate our needs were remarkable, yet she managed to bring a personal touch to every interaction.

It’s rare to find someone who can make you feel both ease ,she made it look effortless. She gave excellent recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. Her positive energy really elevated the entire dining experience.

OKAN Brixton East, you’ve nailed both food and service—thank you for an unforgettable Sunday meal. We’ll definitely...
