My name is "@Mr_Honest_Palate” on social media and youtube, i am a food critic for a local newspaper.
As a seasoned food critic, I hold restaurants to a high standard, especially those claiming to specialize in a particular flavour profile. Today, I ventured into Pepe's Peri Peri Chicken in Morden, eager to experience their take on the peri peri flame-grilled goodness.
A Landing Gone Wrong: The Chicken Burger
My initial optimism took a nosedive upon receiving the chicken burger. The once-proud bun, promising a fluffy embrace, felt limp and forgettable. Disappointment deepened as I bit into the chicken patty. Imagine my horror – it was as dry as a sunbaked desert. The peri peri sauce, if it was ever present, offered no redeeming grace, leaving the entire experience a symphony of blandness.
Clipped Wings: A Disappointing Flight
Hoping to salvage the experience, I turned to the peri peri wings. Alas, the disappointment continued its relentless descent. The wings, much like the burger, suffered from a critical lack of moisture. The char from the grill, instead of adding depth, simply rendered them dry and tough. The promised peri peri punch was absent, leaving a dull heat that lingered unpleasantly.
A Final Verdict: Grounded
Pepe's Peri Peri Chicken, unfortunately, failed to take flight. The dryness of the chicken, both in the burger and wings, coupled with the lack of flavorful peri peri punch, left me grounded in disappointment. While the concept holds promise, the execution falls far short, leaving me craving a truly flavorful and juicy peri peri experience.
Mr. Honest Palate advises: Aspiring peri peri aviators, take your taste buds elsewhere. This particular flock is best left ungrounded.

Let’s start with its strange location - it’s there for all to see on a busy roundabout and the glass windows give it a ‘fish-bowl’ vibe which makes you feel like you’re being watched as you eat. The floor space could be utilised more effectively to maximise eat-in customer capacity and the lack of parking options is also a downside.
Now on to the food. Although unreasonably priced, overall the food is more than decent. The chicken tasca is delectable and the Chick n Rice boxes are also a firm favourite of ours, despite the chicken-to-rice ratio sadly falling heavily on the rice side. A big shoutout to their gorgeous garlic mayo as well, which always salvages the dryness of some of the dishes. Their fries are usually cooked to perfection and the option of a J2O to drink is refreshing (even though the price is extortionate).
The service is quite poor. No table service, the workers are stand-offish and the wait time is always a minimum of 15 minutes.
Overall, Pepe’s offers an underwhelming eat-in experience with nice food but poor service. We would definitely recommend getting a takeaway, however if you’re in a rush you could be waiting a while to get your food. Moreover, with the prices quite high, Pepe’s is probably more of a sporadic ‘treat’ than a...
