An Over-Hyped Culinary Journey to Raya Asian Street Food

Date of Visit: 03/08/2025

Raya Asian Street Food is a Walthamstow restaurant with a currently hidden entrance due to pedestrianization, located next to Turtle Bay.

Parking is difficult, with the nearest free option being Walthamstow School for Girls after 18:30; otherwise, it's 'PayByMobile'.

Ordering is done at the front, with food brought to your table and payment at the end. Customer service can be inconsistent. The seating is tight, and noise levels are high. A significant concern is the blocked access to the restroom, which poses a health and safety risk.

The food, unfortunately, was underwhelming and lacked authenticity.

The Roti Canai was not buttery enough, and its accompanying dhal was bland, while the sambal was weak.

The Murtaba Chicken had a filling similar to a Jamaican chicken patty, with a poor-quality pastry.

Chicken Cracklings were off-putting due to remaining feathers and were unseasoned.

The Curry Puffs (Chicken, Sardine, Lamb) all had poor pastry and uninspired fillings.

The Cendol was a disappointment, tasting synthetic and lacking authentic ingredients.

The Bandung drink was overly sweet and unnatural.

Finally, the Chicken Curry was under-spiced with a watery gravy and poor-quality chicken.

In summary, Raya Asian Street Food is a community hub that fails to deliver an authentic Malaysian or Indonesian culinary experience.

The restaurant is over-hyped from the internet videos it’s promoted on their cooking styles, etc. And caters to a specific clientele. I would advise those seeking genuine Asian street food to avoid it and...

I have lived here for years and cannot believe that I’ve only just found fantastic roti in Walthamstow!! It looks like a kebab shop from the front with hidden seating at the back. My daughters and I ordered Roti Canai in all forms (vegan & chicken) both delicious! and Rendung curry and fish in banana leaves (even better!) and I went back a few days later and had Nasi Goreng & salt fish rice. All our food was delicious and the portions are large for one person. You can see the chef making the rotis which are light, crispy and perfect. The staff are friendly and service was good considering it is a busy place. If you want a good value food Malaysian cafe locally, this is the place to try. I/ we thoroughly recommend this place. If coming by car, you can park in the shopping mall or after 6:30 when parking...

A solid option for Malaysian food in East London.

The food was good but not extraordinary. You will be left satisfied as the food is priced correctly. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion size. Stand out items was the Nasi goreng, Tea Tariq & Cendol. The chow mien was standard, the Mee goreng was good but a little salty, Satay was good, Crispy chicken bites were disappointing, Chicken crackling was ok, Curry Puffs / pastries were disappointing, their version of Beef Rendang was good with a cardamom forward flavour profile a little bit like an authentic korma, the Ayam broth noodle was good with a flavourful broth but the noodles needed a bit more flavour or the addition of free flowing condiments like sambal or chilli on tables would have been nice. Definitely a welcome addition and...

Lovely place with authentic flavors. My go to dishes are: Starters: - Satay skewers. They are tender, served with a delicious rich peanut sauce. Mains: - Laksa, a coconut-based broth with noodles and protein of choice, delivering a perfect balance of creaminess and spice. - Murtabak, a crispy stuffed flatbread with a savoury veggie filling, is delicious and pairs perfectly with the tangy sambal sauce. Drinks: - The Teh Terik (pulled tea) is smooth and sweet, a refreshing complement to the meal. - Bandung (rose-flavored milk) is sweet and fragrant, a refreshing contrast to the spicier dishes. Overall, this place is a must-visit for anyone craving flavourful Malaysian food. The portion size is extremely filling so order with that in mind.

Nice place in the heart of Walthamstow, busy buzzing area. Place is easy to find, difficult to find parking, station parking charges for a full day rather than by the hour. Food was average, not really the taste of Malaysia, Thailand or Indonesian, a little bit on the bland side, sauces on the other hand was very tasty, but need to pay extra Tea tarik after the food is very nice, tasty, hot feel like it is freshly made. Have to pay for food when you order, therefore not making the whole restaurant vide. Atmosphere was poor no back ground music, just have to listen to peoples chatter
