Rio Ice Cream & Cake — Restaurant in London

Jaffna’s legendary ‘Rio ice cream’ has landed in London.

Located in Lewisham, south east london, ‘Rio ice cream and cake’ opened for business in September 2020 after completing renovation work on their 30 seater ice cream parlour.

The ice cream, cakes and rolls (mutton and veg) are all freshly made on-site, following their much-loved Jaffna recipes. If you’ve tried Rio ice cream in Jaffna or Colombo, you’re in for a treat.

Rio are known for their vast and exotic ice cream flavours, the use of Sri Lankan style fruit salad, jelly and generous sprinklings of smarties, cashew nuts and chocolate in elaborate towering specials and sundaes.

Established 40 years ago, Rathinam Industrial Organisation(RIO) is a Tamil family run business from Jaffna in Northern Sri Lanka. The popular brand has stood the test of time and Sri Lanka’s civil war.

A stay in Jaffna isn’t complete without a visit to RIO. Their main outlet in Jaffna is located in Nallur, a town known for the temple and ther (chariot) festival which continues to attract thousands of Hindu Tamil devotees from across the world.

Their branch in Wellawatte (a neighbourhood in Colombo, western Sri Lanka) is a firm local favourite for ice cream scoops, sundaes, milkshakes and specials - usually followed by a beachside stroll along Marine drive...

Seating area very bad - Not comfortable at all. Toilet not clean. Ice cream not good as Jaffna taste. Even not much the taste with dreams / creams.Customer Service very delayed. This is the first and last visit. I-don’t recommend to any one.

I don’t understand why the owner this much attitude. I only post my experience when I visited there. Also I have the rights to review the service and product but you said ‘shame on you write the comments like this’.

I never experienced this type of reply from the service providers. Also you said ‘ Above all you did not write any reviews about any other outlets but you decided to write about us’.

That is my freedom and choice where can I write or not to write. you can’t tell me where am I able to write my reviews. I really think your comments...

Ordered vegan cupcakes in September for daughter's birthday. We paid £25 on collection and crossed over the road to the venue. When we got there this is how we opened the box (picture). So my question is how can they sell cupcakes without cupcake holders? We phoned Rio immediately who said we could bring them back to re-ice after 5pm, by which point we were in full swing of the party which finished at 3pm, and our vegan guests didn't get to have any cake but they did get to see the cake mush we got given my Rio. We tried to chase a refund and we were ignored by management. So have to leave negative feedback for the presentation of the cupcakes and lack of resolution. We will no longer recommend this place to our friends and family....
