Along with its rival, F Mondays (situated almost directly opposite), over the last couple of years Stir has introduced some welcome sweetness and flavour to the cafƩ offerings available to residents of Brixton Hill, who hitherto were especially poorly served on this particular stretch of the long and congested climb to Streatham. Natural sweetness to boot, and flavour too, for all here is artesenal, organic and wholesome, with full-flavoured coffee, boutique tea-bags, estate-sourced fruit juices, cordials, and spritzes, and an extensive range micro-brewery produced beers and lagers. To complement these we have the usual pastries, together with some robustly constructed sandwiches, salads, and a daily changing hot special.
Perhaps best of all (usually) are the dark slabs of cake, none of which betray even a hint of association with paltry refined sugars, but instead rely on ingredients such as carrot, beetroot, ale and citrus. Even a lemon drizzle cake shows up in an unusually earthy hue: a pity then that the lemon had not drizzled a little longer, and just a little icing sugar permitted to drape itself to preserve the moistness of the crumb. But this is a small complaint against this newcomer's characterful offerings.
Everywhere the decor is raw timber and exposed brick, save for stools which may have first served 'neath the tender cheeks of pre-teen cherubs, and hence are sealed and polished smooth. The bathroom is fine if you're not too bothered by the prospect of blowing off in a packing crate. Do your worst in there, the staff are hip enough to handle it, and always friendly. Let's hope that stir will continue to be part of the Brixton Hill mix for a good long...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI wanted to try out Stir Coffee as I was in the area and saw good reviews for it.
Unfortunately it didnāt live up to the reviews for me. The staff seemed friendly enough, but were busy making coffee with no direct eye contact when asking for the order. I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk to have in. They got me a latte with milk. They were however quick to correct it, and got me a cappuccino within a few minutes. The cappuccino lacked any bite and all I tasted was milk. It was luke warm.
The person sat next to me ordered the same (cappuccino) and had nice latte art on his coffee, mine was just froth on top, which made me question, if they actually changed my order.
The atmosphere was great. Lots of tables to work on, people happy to share tables and free WiFi. The background music was great and very enjoyable. I didnāt feel rushed to leave by staff when I finished my coffee.
I was greeted with a āThanks and Byeā when I left, which was also nice.
Perhaps, I will order a drip/pour over next time, but unfortunately on this occasion the coffee did not live up to the atmosphere...

Thereās a range of tasty cakes on offer and I tried one of the artisan sandwiches - the haloumi and guacamole bun which toasted was delicious. Prices are good for London and thereās plenty of seating including some quirky old...
