ABSOLUTELY DISAPPOINTING!!! I was a costumer at the tea house today and unfortunately there was no one there with whom I could speak, no one in charge which is really unusual and unbelievable... but what I want to say is that for the first time I was really disappointed with the place. I have been there few times and always left satisfied with the food and service, so has my boyfriend. Having his family visiting in London for the first time we wanted to take them for a Sunday roast before leaving to the airport and thought the tea house would be the perfect place for a nice family lunch. My boyfriend confirmed on your website that there was Sunday roast on the menu and called during the week to book a table for 9 people today at 12.30. We were very surprised and disappointed when we got there and asked for the Sunday roast to hear that you no longer do it. We checked the website again today and confirmed it is still there on the menu so this hasn't been updated and whoever took the reservation for 9 people on a Sunday didn't bother to alert to the act that there would be no Sunday roast! We obviously didn't have time to go find another place so we accepted your employee suggestion of the closest replacement of a traditional Sunday roast, the ploughman Sunday whatever, thinking it would be some sort of roast and still good. You should have seen everybody's disappointed face when the dishes arrived, no words can describe it or how we felt for having taken our family to eat that on their last meal in London. The suggested dish is nothing more than a bunch of cheeses, gravies and sliced roast beef from the supermarket, something I could easily have done at home! I was so so disappointed that I quickly forgot my previous good experiences there and now I don't feel I will ever be able to go back there. I can't go back in time and revert this experiencie so all I can do is inform all potential future costumers who might want...
Read moreI came into this place on the off chance- wanting a quiete place to sit and do some work, to relax in cosy atmosphere. Perfect- job done. It's cosy and delightful inside. Then served a lovely cup of tea ... £6!!! Still good. Waiting staff lovely so far. Then the smell of kedgeree wafting and I had to order some. Sadly, downhill from here. Food arrived - I know it says 'British food' in the blurb about this place but does it have to go for the stuff we'd all rather forget about .... dry, tasteless, over-cooked. What are there standards??? I was hungry, but could not eat this. My kedgeree had been nuked in a microwave and what came out was a mound of mouth shrivellingly dry, tasteless rice with some bits of egg and even less bits of (boney) mackerel. Surrounded by iceberg lettuce with dried out sliced tomatoes and cucumber. I couldn't wish it down with wine as it hadn't arrived (took about 10 mins, in a not very crowded dining room). When the wine arrived I took the opportunity to offer feedback on the food in front of me which id given up on. The guy (one of the owners??) listened... but then proceeded to defend it. "Never had this feedback before.... mackerel always has bones .... maybe you just got unlucky...." He returned After taking my plate to ask me what I'd suggest- "we want to learn". I offered thoughts, but only useful if they're actually going to act on it. He offered me cake, which I declined. (I'm still hungry, but not for cake, not any of their food if that's the standard). The final sting... he 'considerately' gave me the food I hadn't eaten at lunchtime price of £8, instead of £12. If I were I his shoes, i would not feel comfortable charging a customer anything for a meal they clearly did not enjoy, or eat. So, top marks for atmosphere, but I won't recommend this place nor come back In a hurry. Argh! So disappointed and so saddened. Do go for a drink, a tea (pricey but good) or some theatre....
Read moreThis place has so much potential. Lovely cosy atmosphere with inviting looking 'home cooked' cakes on every table. As a tea lover this was a dream. However...the young girl with dark hair working there gave us the most unwelcoming 'vibe' ...no smile or welcome greeting. Had to move tables as the music was too loud and I asked for it to be turned down, was told by the young lad working behind the counter that the owner likes it at a certain level!! Ok...had breakfast which wasnt too bad. The service was pretty average though and there were three people in the whole place.
Thought we would give it another go for dinner as we were staying nearby. Having travelled for three months throughout the entire UK and Europe, I would have to rate this as the WORST service I have encountered on our trip. It doesnt even deserve one star but you can't do anything less. Two customers at one table and the same three staff members when we walked around 10 to 6pm. Again, very unwelcoming, particularly by the young dark hair waitress. Was told they do table service. Had to sit outside due to music being too loud again. Not one staff member came out to ask our order. Had to go in to order. Didn't have the tomato soup as they had 'run out of tomatoes', asked for water and ice...had to remind them. Hubby had the shepherd pie which was tough and dry and inedible. Absolutely worst experience of dining in the UK.
Such a shame as it has a lovely cosy atmosphere. Some chairs look like they need a bit of TLC and are past their use by date. What a shame for our last night in the UK. Would recommend anywhere else...the pub on the corner that Tay Tay is singing about. I never really leave reviews but this is pathetic.
Replace your staff or have a staff PD on customer service!!! Or some common courtesy. Don't bother replying to this with some sugary sentiment. Just do better for others who come to this...
