My spiritual home. One of, if not the oldest gay club/venue in London or the UK (don't quote me on the exact details, but it's definitely something like that)! This quaint, beautiful freestanding monolith on the edge of the Vauxhall gyratory and standing guard to and at the entrance of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, has been screaming it's siren's call at me for at least 18 years of my 20 living in London. Like the sailors fleeing to be dashed upon the rocks, it is a call I still, cannot ignore.
Looking for an amazing night out, or just need to be surrounded by some lovely, no attitude, accepting gayers and their friends? Then you will be hard pushed to find anywhere in London, the UK or the entire planet that even comes close.
Globally acclaimed and a constant draw for some of the finest entertainment (DJ's, cabaret, bands and singers) talent around. A constant theme being how both privileged the performers feel to be able to say they have done a turn or for the very rare few, a residency at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
I never though I would be in love with a building or place, but there you have it. At least one visit (if not a few years of relentlessly attending one of the weekly or monthly nights) should be on everyone's Bucket List...
Read moreYou'd think that being Gay in London would mean you have access to a plethora of great Gay clubs and bars!? That's not strictly true. Sure Soho has a good selection of Gay and gay friendly bars but none hold a candle to the Royal Vauxhal Tavern. The grand dame of gay venues nestled in Vauxhal., close to the tube station. I discovered this piece of pure gold quite late in life. Sure, its not state of the art or huge, quite the opposite. Its an old venue that harken back to the days of cabaret and entertainment. It still has so much in terms of entertainment that no other Gay or straight bar in London cones remotely close to. I've spent many a booze fueled, laughter filled night in this wonderful venue. It has the best atmosphere of any gay bar or club I've ever been too. If you're more into bars than clubs then this is for you. Check out Duckie, a special night with excellent djs and crazy acts thrown in for your pleasure. I'll be going to the RVT until...
Read moreHaving spoken to one of the owners on the phone (who was absolutely lovely) to confirm we could buy tickets on the door, my friend and I travelled to the RVT from Canada Water, on recommendation from friends. Within minutes of being there, as the only female in the bar, someone threw their entire drink over me and told me that I “brought it on myself” for going there. Another man commented on my cleavage after speaking to his friends about wanting to make me feel uncomfortable, and people looked at me like I was less than the dirt on their shoes. Having paid £15 for entry and quickly downing my pint, I begrudgingly left after 15 minutes after being made to feel less than welcome. The owner I spoke to was lovely, but please visit here with caution unless you are a male - LGBTQI+ women, you have...
