🚇 Shadwell 🍺 £6.00 Pravha ❤️ The East End’s legendary music venue. . The George Tavern stands loud and proud on the corner of Commercial Road and Jubilee Street. Getting here is easy, Shadwell overground and Shadwell DLR are close by. . Formerly known as the Halfway House, originally built 1623, this pub is mentioned in texts by Chaucer, Pepys and Dickens. This grand three storey Georgian pub was built around 1825 and is Grade II listed. In 2002, artist Pauline Forster bought the derelict building at auction and reopened it as a music, performance and arts venue, and pub. . Over the last two decades, The George has fought widely-publicised battles against the developer Swan Housing Group, who own Stepney’s Nightclub and the Exmouth Estate, which is adjacent to the pub. In 2016, the George won its legal battle against Swan Housing Group in a Court of Appeal, the fight continues today. . The decor here is shabby chic with a hotchpotch mix of tables, chairs and furniture. The servery is ornate and has beautiful tiled mosaics behind it which date from 1891. There are decorative columns with detailed fixtures on the ceiling. The focal point of this historic pub is the stage complete with a piano which Andrew Lloyd Webber played recently. . The beer line up was good and included a couple of cask ales. I decided on a pint of Pravha, my pint was great and was average price. . I arrived at 5pm not long after the pub had opened. I was served by a bubbly member of staff who was all smiles and very welcoming. There was a band doing a soundcheck and warming up for their gig later on that night. There were a few other punters in enjoying a late afternoon drink. The vibe here is very atmospheric. . @thegeorgetavern is a part of the East End’s heritage and thanks to Pauline Forster this pub’s legacy continues. I loved visiting this pub and soaking up the history. To get the full experience I need to return to catch a band and see this place in full flow. This is a must visit East End pub and long may it continue. . ℹ️ Info correct on...

Last night about 9.00 I tried to go into the George tavern for a pint I followed 3 25 to30 year olds who walked straight in however I was stopped by the doorman who told me I there was No room as it was full I could see this was not the case I tried to reason with him and explained I just wanted a quick pint but it was still a no .I then called the George and enquired if I needed to make a booking to come in and have a pint I was told no it was fine I informed the young lady I spoke to that I would be there in a minute ( who was very helpful and professional ) the doorman went to stop me again told him I had a bookling and the young lady I spoke to was there to greet me so I gained entry (much to the annoyance of the doorman who didn't look happy ) I sat down at one of the vacant tables the doorman was straight over pointing out the reserve sign which looked like a standard sign as they was one on every table my Florence nightingale arrived with my pint of Carling (@£5.00 very reasonable ) and too me to the beer garden where there was plenty of seating available I finished my pint on the way I said goodbye any thank you to the doorman who was busy on his phone and never answered me I myself am a publican I have been so for over 40 years I would never let my staff treat a customer the way I was treated by the doorman at the George it was discrimination at the highest level granted I was probably the oldest person in the George ( 63 ) pubs have signs for a minimum age but not for a maximum age so please don't...

Summer 2021

Great music venue in East London, part of the renowned toilet gig circuit. (Toilets are very clean and well stocked in this pub)

Large main room with large stage which presents an all round good view of stage.

This event was a socially distanced one during covid times, which meant venue was well ventilated.

Great beer and outside seating area. 'Hard of Hearing Music Magazine' lineup of bands was of great quality, and the acoustics in the room were good.

Worth noting ....

If the pub has a gig scheduled for that night you do need to book a ticket in advance to get into the venue.

Booking was available via 'DICE' Tickets. In this instance gig was was fully sold out at capacity so no tickets available to buy on the door.

Easter 2022 George Tavern:

Hard of Hearing Magazine 'Intersteller all day Event'.

Charity gig to raise funds for Trussel Trust support for rough sleepers, and Ukraine Conflict (affected families - non weapons purchase)

Bands Fraulein Headboy Painted Bird Hand of God

Great all dayer gig in great venue, good lighting, good stage space, good acoustics, good beer, good crowd, good bands.

Pub and music venue which also has a food offering. Easy to get to being a short walk away from Shadwell DLR and Overground stations plus many buses pass by. They have a large outside courtyard with covered seating and a hut at the far end where you can order pizza from, they are top notch and not outrageously priced. No real craft beers but a healthy selection nonetheless with pricing typical of the area. The sound is good but the lighting leaves a lot to be desired and the smoke machine is ridiculous as both the stage and audience get engulfed, I'm not sure if it is healthy. Loos are on the ground floor but there are steps so the less able bodied may struggle. They have been clean each time I have been with soap and a working drier too. Overall for a music venue it's pretty good
