🚇 London Bridge 🍺 £4.80 Amstel
The George is located on busy Tower Bridge Road in Bermondsey Southeast London. The nearest Tube is London Bridge, it’s a ten minute walk to get here.
This pub was originally built in 1842 and was originally called The Sportsman, it was renamed The George around forty years later. The pub was rebuilt in the 1930s for Truman’s by their inhouse architect, A. E. Sewell. This pub is now owned and run by Craft Union.
This is a good size pub with two connecting bars. Although the pub has been altered somewhat, there are many surviving interwar features. At core of this pub is a beautiful horseshoe servery with its original bar back. Other original features include wood panelling, leaded stained windows and some nice art deco styling above the fireplaces. Towards the back left of the pub is a dartboard then a door leading to a courtyard beer garden.
The beer selection is full of familiar keg favourites. I decided on an Amstel, my pint hit the spot, price point was great at under five quid. This is a wet-led pub so it doesn’t serve food, but just across the road is @manzespieandmash so I treated myself to a 2 & 1 after my visit.
I visited just before 5pm on a showery Saturday afternoon in August. The pub had a dozen or so punters in attendance who all seemed local. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed with a laidback local pub feel. There was a chilled soundtrack with TV’s on mute showing Soccer Saturday and the horse racing. A couple of lads yelped as they must have had it off the horses and won a few bob. I had a chat with the Guv’nor who was a very nice chap indeed.
Visiting The @georgetowerbridge was an excellent experience. I love the 1930’s interwar architecture and the original Artdeco fixtures and fittings. The beer choice was no nonsense and reasonably cheap. The atmosphere and ambiance had that local pub feel and it was really easy to settle in. This pub ticks all the boxes for me, this is a superb traditional London Pub.

Read morethe beers were ok, Guinness did not settle properly at all! And the chips were soggy! And above all, the server was so so so rude, I’ve been a bartender for a year, I get the stress and everything, but this was beyond that, I don’t know the name of my server, but she wore specs and has braids (two), she spilled my drink and served me literally half and charged full, when I asked for a refill because of her mistake I think she just added water to my drink/ and was super rude about it, anyway, I’ve been to the George before and have had amazing experiences, I’m really disappointed this time coz I took my friends on my good word. I wouldn’t write this if the server was rude once, she was constantly super rude! And I paid extra for the drinks...
Read moreWe stayed in a hotel in Old Kent Road. We walked to Tower Bridge and found this pub on the way. It is about 20 minute walk from Tower Bridge. The place is full of locals. All freindly and no unwelcome vibe some places can have. It had a good atmosphere about it.The staff were all good. If you like sport, they had football and racing etc. The best part is a pint of Strongbow was £4.10. That is nearly £2 cheaper than the tourist spots. Aspalls was a bit more at i think was £4.50. That is still cheap as i paid £6.10 in one pub in the main tourist place. We made it our base after walking from the City The only negative was no...
