🚇 Farringdon 🍺 £8.00 Gamma Ray
The Gunmakers is located on the western edge of Clerkenwell, not far from Exmouth Market. The nearest Tube is Farringdon, Chancery Lane is also close by.
The Gunmakers was not built as a public house, but became one in the second half of the nineteenth century. It is thought that the pub’s name is a reference to a riflemaker’s workshop that operated on the premises.
This pub is sort of London Boozer (exterior) meets Cocktail Bar (interior) and is compact and intimate. As you enter, you arrive into a small bar area with the servery located on the left. If you head up some steps at the back, there is a snug with a comfy banquette and a large etched mirror. There is an additional room on the first floor with a traditional fireplace and jazzy tables. At the rear of the pub is a covered courtyard beer garden which is brightly decorated with a Mexican feel.
The beer selection offers six keg beers to choose from. I decided on a Gamma Ray, my pint was great but pricey at £8. If you like Tequila, there are over twenty to choose from as well as a selection of cocktails. The food menu is Mexican, the chef hails from Guadalajara in Mexico and serves up a selection of Tacos and traditional Mexican dishes.
I arrived around 3.30pm on an overcast Friday afternoon in April. The pub was quiet prior to local workers descending on the pub for a post work beverage. I got talking to the team member on duty who was warm, welcoming and friendly. We had a nice chat about the pub and trade in general.
As mentioned earlier, the @the_gunmakers is part boozer, part cocktail bar. I enjoyed my visit, especially the warm hospitality. This pub offers a minimal beer selection and a vast array of tequilas. If you like Mexican food, you’ll be well catered for. Nice vibes, loved the tropical beer garden, not open weekends, worth a look if you’re in the area.

Read moreA real find. If you want genuine Mexican - eg. the scent of the tacos literally taking you back to when you were in Mexico 14 years ago - come here. If you are looking for genuine polite, attentive and professional service, come here. The girl/woman (sorry for describing you that way, I didn't get your name) has to have been one of the best waitresses I've had in London in years. Same goes to the chap who might have been the manager/owner. The team make you feel very welcome. Food is delicious. Good selection of cider, beers and the rose wine went down well too. I'd recommend the guacamole for the table, plus we enjoyed sharing the lamb shank. Will definitely return. Ps the 'beer garden' is under cover so good for rain, not if you plan on...
Read moreA nice place but pretty pricey and small food portions.
There's a covered, heated outdoor area, which was perfect, recommend sitting there, nice vibe.
Wines are not great, unfortunately, and minimal selection. I ordered a picante margarita but it unfortunately wasn't very nice, perhaps the apple juice or cucumber didn't quite work.
Guacamole was amazing, and the tacos are pretty good- Camerones was the highlight - but they're small for the price & you only get two (usually 3 is standard). Quesadilla was nice because it was very cheesy, but lacked flavour.
Staff were great, super nice & friendly, and the vibe is nice, just need the food & cocktails to be a bit nicer to...
