I used to really like this place, had a lovely friendly and relaxed atmosphere (plus is dog friendly). I haven't been for a while as I was travelling but as I am back home in St John's Wood I thought I'd go there with a friend for Sunday lunch. I have no idea what has happened but unfortunately it was nothing like I remembered. It was very quiet which was surprising for Sunday lunchtime (2pm), but that in itself wasn't a problem. The young guy left in charge was pleasant and courteous but just doesn't have the experience or the skill to be left alone to tend to the customers. Considering it wasn't busy at all the staff should make sure the tables are clean and there is no dirty tissue paper just lying on the floor as they walk past it repeatedly and keep ignoring it. I moved tables 3 times before I found one that wasn't so sticky and dirty. Even that one wasn't really clean but was better than the rest. The drinks I ordered came in dripping wet glasses and my glass had a very long human hair on top of it, as he put the glass down I removed the hair and he saw me do it but said absolutely nothing. Someone with minimal knowledge of customer experience would not do that. When our Sunday beef roast arrived it looked so unappetizing. My friend gave me this look and said 'I thought you said this place was great, is it a practical joke'? Honestly, I have seen better Sunday lunch microwave meals than the plates we got, it was really bad (I wish I took a photo of it but didn't think of it at the time). It's a shame as this was a lovely place, I hope they can make some changes to bring it back...
Read moreIt was a lazy Sunday afternoon, and I decided to finally go to The New Inn in St. John's Wood to take a look at their food menu. I was at the pub before one or two times, but never ordered any food. One time I was there to meet some local Twitter folks and the fabulous barman mixed a great little Daiquiri (if I remember correctly) with some quite strong (and rare?) spirit. It tasted great and left a lasting impression, the guys at The New Inn really know their cocktails.
I was a bit sad to discover that there was no burger on the Sunday menu. As I never tried a traditional Sunday roast before, I quickly decided to get a chicken roast. It was a wise choice, the chicken roast was very good and looked beautiful on the plate and my wine was fine as well. Now I should probably go for Sunday roasts more often...
I was a bit surprised that some live music was on, but it was quite pleasant. Live music always is a nice touch.
Unfortunately the waiter forgot about my starter, making the most of it, I simply asked for it after I finished my roast. Another good decision, because the arancini were really delicious!
Besides drinks and food, the place seemed to draw in a fair number of locals, giving the pub a nice atmosphere. A rather good-looking local at a neighbouring table somewhat distracted me from my food and wine. But this was a very welcome distraction on a rather dull Sunday and I do not mind that I cannot remember which wine I had.
The New Inn is a nice pub and recommended for a Sunday roast. I will definitely come back for...
Read moreBizarre experience for breakfast on Sunday after the Regent’s Park run. We arrived hungry, enticed by the breakfast boards outside. Most of us wanted cooked food but a couple just wanted the advertised muffins.
Pub was empty but it took ages to be served. When our order was finally taken the first of our 7 person party to order asked for a muffin and the waitress immediately left the table to retrieve it, leaving everyone else without having ordered anything (and the muffin orderer not having even ordered his drink).
Once the muffin was served she asked everyone for their drinks order only and then disappeared to make those drinks, which took ages. So, in the meantime, we cut up our friend’s muffin and shared it between us. It wasn’t great. Like the cellophane wrapped kind you pick up in a service station.
The drinks eventually came and several of the coffees were lumpy, obviously made in a machine maybe with powdered mixture. By this point we had lost all faith and decided against ordering our hot breakfasts. We left shortly after, most not having even finished our drinks as they were so unpleasant.
Utterly bizarre. The pub is beautifully renovated and advertises an extensive menu for weekend breakfasts and brunch. This time the service (and the drinks) totally let it down. They missed a trick. Wouldn’t...
