🚇 Crouch Hill 🍺 £5.60 Pravha
The Railway Tavern is located in the heart of Crouch End just south of the Clock Tower. The nearest station is Crouch Hill overground.
The original pub on this site was built in 1896. This Mock-Tudor pub is named after the nearby and now-disused Crouch End railway station. This former Charrington's house was rebuilt in 1937 when this section of Crouch End Hill was cleared to make way for the Mountview Telephone Exchange. This is the sister pub of The Enterprise in Holborn.
This is a traditionally decorated pub that retains many of its original interwar fixtures and fittings. There is a remnant of a partition positioned halfway in the bar which indicates that this would have been a multi-roomed pub. The servery is located on the right hand side and has an elegant back bar with Charringtons insignia. There is plenty of seating throughout and beautiful wall panelling below leaded windows. There are some lovely features like the inglenook fireplace, the hanging biplane and the skittles table. Tucked away at the back of the pub is secluded beer garden complete with dartboard.
The beer line up was full of familiar favourites and included three cask ales. I decided on a pint of Pravha, my pint was excellent and pleasingly cost less than six quid. The food menu is a mix of Jamaican and Sri Lankan cuisine, traditional Roasts with a Jamaican twist are available on a Sunday.
We arrived just before 1pm on a Sunny Saturday lunchtime in August. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed with a few punters dotted around the pub both inside and out. The two team members on duty were welcoming, friendly and courteous. We pulled up stools at the bar to enjoy our pints and marvel at the interwar interior.
This pub hosts Quiz Nights, Open Mic and Live Music
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the @railwaytavernn8 especially the local pub feel and the superb 1930’s interior. The beer was on point and not overly priced, the service made it easy to settle in. Crouch End has an excellent array of pubs, The Railway is most definitely up there with the best of them.

Read moreI rarely left an unsatisfactory review of a pub/restaurant but I had a bad experience. The first time after so long I came to this pub was excellent. The food was great, the atmosphere was enjoyable. Then I decided to take my dad for lunch here. We came 30 mins early and were greeted by overly friendly lady from the kitchen. The menu was a lot and she recommended some menu for us. Starters were good and tasty. But before we finished our starters she took one of our plates. And before we had a bit of time to digest the starters, the main came. I had goat curry for my main but it was disappointing, the meat was overcooked and for the price giving only 1 papadum is a bit steep. My dad’s main was calamari with salad. The calamari was alright but the salad looks a bit poor with just sprinkle of feta and little dressing. Before we even asked for the bill (less than 5 mins after we finished eating), she gave us the bill. It’s giving ushering us out. It is the kind of ‘everyone’ pub so pets and kids are around. When we were there, the pub was quiet and there were two kids running around, stomping on the floor and shouting. Not that intrusive but just be aware. For the price we paid, better to go to proper local restaurants in crouch end (many options). I understand the management separation between the bar and the kitchen but, please be more organised, a good example Would be the salisbury’s on green lanes. Personally I was being uncomfortable by being rush into things. We wanted to have chill and nice lunch experience but what we got was different. Personally I won’t be coming back here.
I give credit to the bar staff and the bar experience as it was delightful. They were friendly and accommodating. My main problem was just...
