🚇 Elephant & Castle 🍺 £3.33 Carlsberg ❤️ A basic Spoons that serves the local community well. . The Rockingham Arms is located in Elephant & Castle at the bottom of the Metro Central Heights building, the former headquarters of the DHSS. The nearest Tube is Elephant & Castle which is just across the road. . The original Rockingham Arms which stood on this site was built in 1888 (see last picture). It was demolished in the early 1960’s when the Elephant & Castle was being redeveloped, what a travesty! Most of what was built then is now being redeveloped again, I’m all for progress but London’s 1960’s planners have got a lot to answer for. . The decor here is quintessential basic spoons, this place looks very sparse and almost barren. This is a sizeable boozer with a a long sweeping servery that has a open plan area to the left and a carpeted more secluded area to the right. . The beer range is broad and includes five cask ales. I decided on a pint of Carlsberg, my pint was decent enough and cost just over three quid, when did you last buy a pint that started with a three. The food menu was the familiar Wetherspoons offering, Fish & Chips costs £9.78. . I arrived just after midday on a Saturday lunchtime and the atmosphere was low key. The pub was fairly busy with a predominantly senior crowd and a few waifs and strays. The local community are well represented here, you can see how important this pub is to its daytime punters who meet to catch up and share how life is going. One observation I made was how many solo punters there were, many were gazing out the window, you could almost see life’s regrets in their eyes, a penny for your thoughts Sir. . The Rockingham Arms isn’t going to tick many boxes for most people apart from the price point. But, if you are a local, it will probably tick almost every box because everything you need is right here, friendship, familiarity and respect from your peers. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. . ℹ️ Info correct on...
Read moreWe’ve visited this place more than once in the past and found the food either cold or inedible so we’d stopped going. After noticing that they’d refurbished the place recently we plucked up courage to try it again. As we approached and entered the building it was noted that there was a considerable amount of change as we found a table, we placed an order but noticed there had been a big hike in food prices. After a longer wait for the drinks and food than expected and baring in mind that it was Mother’s Day. Eventually the order arrived, the food was cold if that’s what you would call it. You would think that ordering fish and chips would be an easy thing to present to your customers, wrong. If you think you’re going to receive a full meal then you’re going to be very disappointed as we were, for £12.50 you will get about 8 cold chips, a dollop of mushy peas and on both plates less than half of the fish was inedible as most of it was made up with over cooked batter. Congratulations to the Rockingham Arms for continuing to provide the lowest standards that was repeated from our previous visits. Sadly if you make any changes to improve your dishes after this review then it’s too late to welcome us back and we will continue to go elsewhere. It became very obvious as we left that there were a lot of empty tables for what should have been a very busy day. Sadly there are no following photos as the whole thing became too...
Read moreVisited this Wetherspoons on 6th March with my partner. When we walked in the atmosphere felt horrible, the place didn't feel clean and it looked like an old bingo hall that had just been filled with tables, chairs and a bar. We finally found a seat and ordered food and drinks.
Whilst waiting for our food we were looking at the decor from our seats and couldn't help notice the ceiling falling apart all over the place and how badly it needed renovating.
Finally our drinks arrived but were taken to two different tables first asking if they had ordered them (do they not know the location on the system of the table?), followed by our food a little while later also being offered to other tables first. This seemed to be a thing that the waiter kept doing with several peoples orders.
The food was standard hence the 1 star, before the food this Wetherspoons did not warrant one star. Also having ordered a little pizza that came uncut we weren't given anything to cut it with. Before leaving me and my partner both nipped to the toilet one after the other. Down this long hallway which felt horrible and unsafe for some reason, probably because you felt a little on edge from when you entered the venue.
If they renovated this venue and set up a system that works regarding delivering orders to the correct table then I may come back and reevaluate my review but until then it will remain.
So far "WORST...
