An Italian friend invited me and a friend out on a Saturday night and we decided to try this new place. Three of us were greeted with a 20min wait at the table with a basket of warm dry bread and a dish of prepackaged blocks of butter. At my second request, a dish of olive oil for dipping the bread arrived, but there was also some young vinegar involved, which being sharp and sour, spoiled the main condiment for the bread. Some common-variety supermarket olives were upgraded with the help of a garlic salsa (minced raw garlic and onion). One of my Italian companions gets indigestion from garlic, but she never got the chance to tell anyone. When a starter of grilled vegetables arrived three sad rings of courgette or small aubergine looked up from the plate under strings of roasted pepper that could only have originated from the sunlit uplands of a jar's bottom. A single carved decorative cherry tomato on top and some leaves of rocket made this into a starter. Intriguingly, by that point we had still not had the opportunity to order wine or sparkling water (we waited a long time for a jug of tab to arrive to extinguish the olives!). I mentioned the very dead looking rose ornating the small vase at the table - the ever flying-by owner-manager swapped it for another vase from a neighbouring table. That was the height of the evening’s service but there was better to come! When the primo piatto arrived my born and bred Italian companion had to send back the spaghetti as they were undercooked. When ultra-“aldente” becomes an Italian cook’s way of telling their customer they are not Italian enough, I’d recommend that they eat their own food. My gnocchi de la casa, in a gentle sauce of lightly cooked courgette with prawn, were cooked to edible level which was regrettable in this case as they tasted of nothing and it was a plate entirely devoid of texture. Thankfully my mismatched glass of earthy red wine saved my palet. Our host was the only one who scored a good dish with the bacon and tomato pasta. But all was not lost! The manager produced some limoncello to end our evening, which pleased my Italian friends but did nothing for me, though that made no difference to the establishment. If I had wanted something else I would have had to ask for it but by that point of the night there was just no strength or will left! But me enjoying it was not the point, the complimentary sugary liqueur appeared, as it did for the surrounding tables, as a hedging strategy to ensure that patrons actually consented to pay their bills! The night’s bill for £44 including the manager’s “special” 20% discount would make any locale tratoria in Italy blush! All in all, London is a big enough economy wave to lift all SME boats but this one is headed for the...
Read moreOn the birthday of my friend, we went to Tonis Amalfi, an Italian family restaurant, for dinner.
The business of this restaurant is very good, and the seats are almost full during dinner time. There are 6 of us, and we ordered 6 appetizers and 7 main dishes, but we didn't expect the main dishes to be that big, and the restaurant will give free bread, I feel that if only order 6 appetizers + 3 main dishes will be enough for us.
🐱 Recommended appetizers:
🦐 Braised Prawns in White Wine (Gamberoni al Vino Bianco)
The sause is extremely tastey, and the prawns are plump and juicy, please make sure to eat it with bread dipped in the plate!
🦆
In addition, we also ordered burrata cheese with Parma ham, smoked duck breast with orange and other appetizers, which are also good.
🐱 Main dish recommendation:
🍝 Seafood Linguine (Linguine al Frutti di Mare)
The seafood on the tomato base is paired with Linguine, which is sweet and sour, especially appetizing.
🍄 Mushroom Lasagna (Pappardelle Dello Chef)
This pasta has porcini mushrooms, sausage and truffle oil in a rich sauce with a lingering aroma, highly recommended.
🍲 Seafood Risotto (Risotto Ai Frutti Di Mare)
The rice is drenched in a seafood-based soup, and the color is bright and attractive, every bite is very enjoyable.
🍢 Grilled Seafood
Shrimp, squid, salmon and sea bass, grilled over charcoal fire, the seafood is tender and charcoal-flavored.
🍻 The portions are really big, we packed home many dishes, and there is no room for dessert in the stomach. If we are going there again next time, we will share a main dish between two people, and then try...
Read moreAbsolutely LOVE this restaurant. Went here on Day 1 of a holiday in London. My husband spotted Toni's and made a booking for 5 adults, two teens and two toddlers. We were made really comfortable from the minute we arrived. The staff clearly get on well and that adds to the family vibe. The lighting is ambient and the seats are comfy.
The menu offered dishes to suit those seeking a fine dining experience or alternatively families hoping to have a relaxed meal with the kids. The food is absolutely delicious, served promptly with a smile. My nephew said it was the best pasta he ever tasted and when we went to a Michelen star restaurant two nights later, my son said it didn't compete with the fantastic atmosphere and service in Toni's. We ended up booking a second night there and it lived up to our memory. The kids were treated so well and we left with full bellies and happy faces all around. I'm jealous of the locals as if I lived in London I would be there regularly but we will definitely go back when we are next...
