Pizza, beer, and a crazy movie about a slightly paedophilic Bowie makes for one helluva good night. And when you pizza comes from Voodoo Rayās who dish up a monster 22ā pie, it doesnāt get much better. Well, the beer could have been better, but thatās not the point.
Voodoo Rayās, up in Dalston, has quickly made a name for itself in the pizza business. They keep it simple and primarily just serve fresh pizza from their stack of 4 massive pizza ovens. None of this pasta or fried chicken nonsense, just good dough with a variety of toppings. The names will leave you in stitches as you try to decide what to order. In this case, we opted for the āGot Beefā and āThe Meat is Onā, both of which are a vegetarianās worst nightmare (well maybe the Got Beef is slightly less so as it comes with slices aubergine). However, for carnivores they are pure delight (except for those damn slices of aubergine!).
Each slice is huge and similar to the NY style of pizza making. Your best bet is to fold it in half to help maintain structural integrity as you eat. The toppings are fresh and flavourful and the dough light and crispy. Yes, it is a bit oily and greasy (what good pizza isnāt?) but we never claimed this was a healthy food choice.
If you happen to be out in Dalston late, they have a special pizza which only becomes available after midnight. Iām tempted to make the trek up there one night just to find out what it is. For you sweet lovers out there, they do serve up brownies baked in aforementioned ovens but I canāt talk from personal experience about thatā¦yet.
All in all, a good addition to the Dalston scene and one Iāll be keeping in mind for my next trip up...

Voodoo Ray's, a cheeky pizza joint in London's trendy Dalston, does just that. A Guy called Gerald even endorses this place, having switched on the lights at their opening back in November 2013.
Each time I visit, Dalston feels more and more like NY's lower East side and Voodoo Ray's along with sister bar Dalston Superstore are proof of this.
On entering Voodoo Ray's it instantly feels like stepping into a local New York pizza joint.
Unlike many pretenders, the pizza lives up to the promise ...
Authentic New York Pies line the counter that stretches the length of the room and are served by the slice with a great selection of craft beer.
Despite London's burgeoning restaurant and street food scene, the options for late night dining are sadly still limited. In New York you find one of these in every neighbourhood.
Let's hope this is the beginning of a new trend in late night dining ...
Open til 3am it's a perfect drop in for any hungry raver. The only thing that this place is missing is a secret bar....oh hold on ... maybe just ask ; )

Ā Ā Ā Read moreHaving been to New York a few times Iāve always wondered when there would be a by the slice pizzeria. I went to the one in Dalston very late into the night after leaving a club. These slices are huge, fresh and have a nice crispy crunch like the NYC ones usually do. And in true New York style I went for a regular slice. Plain and simple it was lovely. I like the addition of the āFull Moon sliceā with bacon dust and Japanese Mayo which is only available from midnight. I know they have just opened a Boxpark branch so hopefully I get to try that soon. Canāt help but think it might be a little too pricey for a slice though. Saying that I think this place is THE place to go for a slice while rivals are good for whole pizzas.
*Note I went to the Boxpark one last night (Thurs 14th May) and it wasnāt open at 11.30 which is rubbish considering itās supposed to be a NYC style pizza jpint. Even for a takeaway? But seems itās because of Shoreditch...
