The Yorkshire Grey used to be a lovely pub with staff who respected, cared for and looked out for the locals who have been supporting the business for the last 20 or 30 odd years. Simple things like a hello on your way in the door or going out of their way to put a name to a familiar face were commonplace, but now I doubt any of the staff would even speak to the customers beyond taking their order or kicking them out at closing time. Unfortunately this was an experience I witnessed the other evening - staff closed the bar early so they could get out the door quicker "because some people working here have to go to uni in the morning", when there were at least 7 or 8 people still in the pub, some of whom having been coming there for nearly 30 years. We were given a warning of last orders, but my friend was outside and I didn't know what he wanted to drink so I waited about 2 minutes until he came back in - he then went straight over to the bar where he was point blank refused a drink! Maybe I'm old-fashioned so forgive me if I'm wrong, but last call doesn't mean we're shutting down the entire bar in the next 30 seconds! Then again, I get the feeling that simple bar etiquette is lost on some of the staff. My friend and I then became uncomfortable as we felt pressured to finish our drinks - so much for enjoying a pint! It's really disappointing to see such a lovely local pub succumb to the all too common issue of worrying more about their profit margins than their loyal,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe were only here for one night, and I wish it had been longer. We were given such a warm welcome by our hosts. I had booked a double room but we were told we were being upgraded - and it was such a treat, the suite here is very well catered for - a kitchenette with tea and coffe making , all diets catered for and the coffee is from an organic and sustainable company, we had complimentary chocolates and water as well. There was also a toaster and airfryer.
The suite was very well appointed with a bath and shower and a very clean, well decorated presentation. There is free WiFi as well as Sky TV and a DAB radio.
The bed was so comfortable that a good night's sleep was had, and the curtains were heavy enough to block out a lot of the traffic noise (we stayed on a Saturday night)
You also have an offer of money of food and drink when you stay there. While we didn't eat in the bar, we did see the plates being served to other customers, and it all looked very tasty.
If you think the location is a bit out of the way, think again - you are 30 minutes walk away from the Loondon Palladium so I would say it's a good location for Covent Garden, theatre land, China Town and Soho. (We chose to walk rather than take the tube)
From the welcome to the time we left, the stay...
Read moreRickety chairs and tables that are falling apart, a TV screen that is smaller than the one I have at home and installed right under the ceiling so that you get a stiff neck. The bar staff are hit and miss, some are miserable, some charming. The food and drinks prices are jaw-droppingly high. I paid £9.50 for a glass of Sauvignon Plonk. NINE POUNDS FIFTY!!!!! I was so shocked that I handed over the money when really I should've told them to shove it where the sun don't shine. A truly horrible burger that came with EITHER salad OR chips set me back £14,50 because I happend to want both salad AND chips. Turns out the salad, which I had to pay a premium for, consisted of a few lettuce leaves with hardly any dressing on them. As an example, at the splendid Rocket pub on the Euston Road I've paid £5,29 for a truly great burger. That's A THIRD of what I paid at the Yorkshire Grey! I really hope this place goes out of business, it's a rip-off and piss-take from start to finish and should be avoided at all cost. I will certainly NEVER EVER...
