My Karak Chai — Restaurant in Manchester

Went in to the store with my friend today and staff had just gone to the back. Waited a little while before my friend ended up calling “hello?” for us to get service. Last came round with a smirk on her face, no apologies for us waiting. We ordered and my friend tried to use her student card which she had done on another occasion with the manager. The lady said they don’t accept it. My friend explained she had used it before and had been told it was accepted by the manager. The lady smirked and said she wasn’t them and shrugged. Really appalling. They also had Matilda cake in the display but the melted chocolate had congealed and it was really unappealing. Several of the cakes set out were looking dry. We paid and sat down to eat. We’d ordered a plain paratha and a paratha with honey. Paratha’s clearly freshly made but mine was with honey and there wasn’t enough honey on it for me. We also had Karak Chais to drink. Apparently they can’t make it unsweetened as the sugar is “already in the mix” so it’s not made from scratch but it was nice. I wouldn’t rush to go back at all. Service was appalling and the food was so so. We tried Nest up the road for brunch yesterday and that was much better (no Paratha’s there though).

Following the reply from the store: we did offer student ID but the lady told us that she would not be giving a student discount. After shoddy customer service, I wasn’t about to ask for more honey. It had been hard enough getting service the first time. The desserts on display may not be served to people but they weren’t labelled as such. Extremely disappointing to say the least. Visited after a while as we have had wonderful home cooked style parathas. Seems since our last visit it’s all take a terrible landslide. We opted for the desi full breakfast which comes with two plain parathas, we asked the server if we can have one keema paratha in place of the two plain parathas to which the server quite rudely and abruptly responded “NO, this can’t be done” which I don't understand why you wouldn’t want to upsell. The two plain parathas that did come with the breakfast were also undercooked. We asked for two karak chais and weren’t given the option of size which the server which put down as large without asking, only a small price difference so we weren’t too fussed. When the karak chai was bought out it was served in very small clay pots to which I asked the server what size chai are these to which she said they’re large. I was gobsmacked to say the least as looking at the clay pots if the chai was to be a regular how small would it be in comparison? A shot glass of chai? And the chai itself was in no way a karak chai, just a plain simple milky desi chai. The food portions were smaller that before also and I found it hilarious how the omelette was served folded into quarters. Truly disappointed in the food and service and don’t think we will be going back again. And as a little advice maybe the FOH girl serving could try crack a little smile at minimum rather than looking so moody like she is being forced to work...

I was disappointed with my experience today. Despite the nice waiter, the food fell short. The Full English breakfast was okay but not hot enough; it did the job when I was hungry. My friend had a toastie that lacked cheese and had an unpleasant taste. She was still hungry and very let down. I noticed from reviews that other people’s toasties looked quite different from ours. The masala chips my friend ordered were not hot, and the chips tasted old and stale with an overpowering curry flavor.

The lack of a refund after complaining was disappointing. I didn’t want to leave a bad review, so I addressed the issues directly with the waiter, who merely thanked me for the feedback. The Matilda cake, which was a combination of pistachio cream, kunafa, and chocolate cake, didn’t work well. After taking only two bites, we complained, but instead of a refund, we were again just thanked for the feedback and offered to take the cake home.
