Had a lovely afternoon with my hubby and grown-up children. Lovely old pub, lovely decor, and friendly people. However, today, Mothers Day, the food wasn't great. Prices were much inflated from their regular prices for the same things. The set menu was pretty easy/standard, various starters which we didn't have, roast dinner with a choice of meats, etc, or fish and chips. Gravy was sparce had to ask for more, roast potatoes were hard and none existent on husbands plate of food? The wait was long, 30 minutes plus.. The beef was very dry. Yorkshire puddings were burnt and a teaspoon of mash potatoes.was inadequate (i didn't want to spend several minutes taking pictures). Son had fish chips with 'mushy peas', which were actually petit pois! I opted for crumble after hearing another customer complaining of the measly slice of cheesecake being too stingy.. The crumble has to be the worst crumble I've ever had! It resembled random chunks of a dark granola on top of scorching hot apple, clearly microwaved and tasteless apart from cinnamon with the smallest possible scoop of ice cream I've ever witnessed, very disappointing. £33 for two courses.. I was really looking forward to it as well. I don't know what was going on today, but looking at other pics of the same meal, it seems something wasn't right.

Walked in and we were greeted by a lovely, friendly and polite server who showed us to our table. We ordered our drinks and food. We were sat enjoying our drink when the server came back over and apologised about our wait which we said was fine but was lovely of her to let us know. Our food came and it was well worth the wait! I asked for more gravy and they happily obliged. When we were finished we walked down to the bar to pay where we were greeted with another friendly face. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes good food, locally sourced from local farms. We will be back

I love the Prince Rupert, so much so that I held my wedding reception here on the upper floor. The building is beautiful and service is great. However I am sad to see that the Buddha bowl has been removed from the menu - it was a great vegetarian choice and delicious. Additionally, the past couple of times I have ordered the sticky toffee pudding it has varied in size, quality, and come with or without the honeycomb topping. Overall a great pub and I just hope they add the Buddha bowl back on to the menu.

Looking for a dog friendly pub in Newark, we chose the Prince Rupert over A N Other establishment because the menu looked marginally better. Table booked for a Wednesday lunchtime but when we arrived we were told that there was no fish and no steak! Ordinarily I would have politely cancelled and gone elsewhere but with two 80 year old grandmothers in tow this wasn't really an option so we stayed. What we ordered from the depleted menu (steak and ale pie, mushroom miso burger, panuozzo, flat iron chicken) was okay but at the end of the day it wasn't what we really wanted. And then just before our main courses arrived, the table behind us ordered fish and chips ! Bizarre. Couple of other points - I ordered the single easiest starter in the world (bread with olive oil) to tide me over because I was hungry but despite the fact the place wasn't particularly busy it took 25 minutes to arrive and only then after I reminded the waiter. Secondly, I fancied a healthy side dish to offset my sausage and stilton panuozzo with chips but there simply isn't one. Coleslaw is for people who pretend to eat vegetables and I dread to think what is used to make sticky red cabbage sticky. Cost £74 for 4 people (four mains, one starter, one pint, three lime and sodas) which isn't bad but we would probably have ordered desserts and possibly coffees as well (and tipped) if we hadn't felt a bit deflated by the experience. I'm afraid that next time we will be going...

Well where do I begin ?? After visiting on a couple of occasions and the food and service being amazing,I returned with family,I'd been telling how great the food was previously, instead I felt totally embarrassed and apologetic...the menu in the past had catered for everyone and was vast, once seated was handed a menu sheet each, which only had about a quarter of the dishes,NO steak, chicken etc,not even any pizzas !! Ended up ordering 3 burger dishes and a sausage and mash, sadly the brioche buns were over cooked along with the crispy chicken on one and the fries,we were asked if we wanted sauces, halfway through eating we were asked if everything was ok,by now the sauces still hadn't arrived...neither had the bottle of wine we ordered,a second waitress had to be reminded of this.I asked this waitress why the menu was now so poor,I was told that it was a delivery problem !!....I'd been raving about how the sticky toffee pudding I'd had there in the past was the best I'd ever had,so ordered it,it was OK but nothing like in the past which looked different and actually tasted homemade, when it came to paying the bill was £110 and was handed a card to review...which I'm now doing.Sadly I don't intend returning, the building itself is fabulous...just don't eat there !!.I will not be recommending to anyone from now on and I know my gusts won't be either. In hindsight I wish now I'd walked out and took my guests to the restaurant across the...
