I met a friend for dinner at The Ram (a place I checked out online before going to Newark for the first time).
I have Coeliacs disease and have intolerances to dairy, eggs, nuts too. It makes it hard to eat out because there are allergens I can't have in a range of traditionally gluten free dishes.
The Ram promised a good range of NGCI (non-gluten containing Items) however they give warnings that there is potential cross contamination as it is an open kitchen. I decided to risk it.
I checked the manual for allergens and discovered that the chips were cooked in the same oil as other glutenous containing foods and so should have had a gluten warning in the book but it didn't. The server made sure I was aware before I ordered though. Sadly it just wasn't in their paperwork.
I discussed with the waiter what I could have and how I could alter my meal without causing issues for both parties (for them to cook or me to eat) and they were very considerate, helpful and understanding. Which I was grateful for. Definitely discuss your meal with a server before placing your order though!
I ordered the steak (with no chips, no salad and no sauces) with added mushrooms, avocado and a rocket side which gave the plate a bit more colour. The meat was done as requested, it was tasty and filling. It might seem plain but overall it was good food I enjoyed, that they were kind enough to cook for me with adaptions!
My friend had the fish and chips and it was huge! It wasn't too big as it was all gone by the end of the meal!
We had drinks. I got a Sangria Mocktail as well as tea. where my friend has a glass of red wine and later had some gin and tonic.
It was a great meal made better by great company, a friendly staff and decent environment. The differently sectioned off areas made some areas more private and intimate than others. The music was a tough too loud for good conversation, but not loud enough to stop conversation entirely.
I would eat there again because of the friendly staff, alone! They regularly checked we were okay and had drinks and anything else we needed and their willingness and enthusiasm to help alay some fears, made it really easy and relaxing. The food was tasty the beverages good, the atmosphere relaxed. I enjoyed my evening! Thanks The Rams staff for such a...
Read moreAsked to a pre order, so we did. When we arrived one of our party could not make it and they told us they had cooked their order (ham and pineapple pizza) so we would have to pay. We said ok. One of our party was also 15 minutes late - we told them as that person wasn't having a starter they should start - they said no they would wait. The starters were fine. But the mains didn't have any sides with them that were pre ordered or any of the adjustments to pizza (no mushrooms type thing) We told them they said they were sorry and they would do fresh ones. After 10 minutes they came back and said they would be another 10 minutes by which time most people had finished their main. One of our party was at the bar and the chef was at the bar talking loudly about the difficult table who wanted to change their order!!! We challenged him about this later and he looked embarrassed and shocked we had heard him - in the public bar!!!. They then told us they couldn't open the attachment properly so they couldn't see the adjustment part of the spreadsheet so none of this was their fault. When we told them it was their spreadsheet they told us we had 'done it wrong' We sent it three days before so why they didn't call is still a mystery. They had to call the owner to get authorisation for us not to pay for the food we hadn’t had!! A horrible experience. I have noticed they like to go back at customers who complain so I am expecting them to say what terrible people we were for wanting the food we had ordered. I would say if you are a big table and your meal matters (ours really did matter, and they ruined it completely) then either go somewhere else or check, check and check again that they have got it right as they are really nasty when they don’t and have no qualms about slagging you off at the bar whilst you are there and then wondering why you take offence to that kind of behaviour. Oh apparently the steak was nice....…and...
Read moreI had an absolutely appalling experience at The Ram, and I feel compelled to share it so others can understand the sheer lack of respect and decency displayed at this establishment. As someone with a disability, I’ve unfortunately encountered my fair share of challenges, but the treatment I received here was beyond unacceptable.
From the moment I arrived, I felt unwelcome. The staff looked down their noses at me, their attitudes cold and dismissive, as though I was somehow a nuisance for simply being there. Not once did I feel I was treated with basic courtesy or respect. Instead, I was met with condescending tones and judgemental glances that left me feeling utterly humiliated.
To make matters worse, the meal I ordered — the Ram Burger — was dreadful. It was dry, overcooked, and looked as though it had been slapped together without an ounce of care. It’s bad enough to serve such poor-quality food, but to do so while treating a paying customer as though they don’t matter? Completely unacceptable.
The most bewildering part of the whole experience was when I tried to order a drink. The staff flat-out refused to serve me alcohol without offering any explanation whatsoever. I hadn’t touched a drop that day, so there was no reason for this. When I politely asked for an explanation, they just shrugged me off, which was not only humiliating but felt deeply discriminatory — as though they were making unfounded assumptions about me based solely on my disability.
This experience wasn’t just disappointing — it was dehumanising. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of who they are. Unfortunately, The Ram seems to have forgotten this entirely. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, especially those who expect to be treated as a valued customer rather than an...
