This was our first visit for my wife’s birthday and although overall we enjoyed the meal it was sadly let down by a few important things, which is a shame considering we had expected much more based on online reviews! Perhaps we caught them on a sub-par day and all 4 of us did choose the same meals, so we only had that to go by.
The roast beef Sunday lunch arrived on cold plates and the gravy had the consistency of water. The beef, although tasty was medium/rare and not particularly how we would choose to have it! It was also rather chewy and there was generally a lack of seasoning within the meal itself. Our desserts, - the chocolate pudding did save the day somewhat as it was really delicious… however, yet again, it was luke warm and we were left feeling that it should have been a hot pudding to go with the ice cream for maximum effect.
It is also worth noting that the wooden seats are particularly uncomfortable.
Ultimately this experience did not meet our expectations and came with a pretty punchy price tag. On a final note it has to be said the service and atmosphere was very good and there was a great selection of drinks to choose. Would we return? ….. possibly to give...
Read moreCame here on recommendation and we weren't disappointed. The service in particular was excellent (thank you Katie, our delightful waiter) and the food did not disappoint either. We drank beer (they have a decent list including guest ales); the wine seemed pretty pricey. We chose a couple of snacks to keep us going; the pork crackling apple sauce combo is essential eating and the oysters were fresh and delicious. As starters you could do worse than the terrine and the salad with cow's curd (which could actually have been Philly ...). I followed this up with the duck egg and haggis on toast (it was recommended to me; I do likewise) which was fab (my only gripe was that the egg had been pre-cooked and kept warm) and my husband chose from the fish menu; pollack with new spuds and mussels. I was unable to resist pud; the date cake came swimming in butterscotch sauce exactly as I'd have chosen. Husband had his usual souped-up coffee - and his only gripe was he could barely taste the promised alcohol. But all in all a...

Just afterwards, their place in the Top 50 gastropubs of the UK was announced & I can see why. Downstairs is a bar for various craft ales & home-cooked bar snacks whilst the dining area is upstairs. Although we arrived 30 minutes early, our table was ready for us. The food was amazing & the portion sizes were very generous. Highlights were the cauliflower fritters with curry mayonnaise & bubble & squeak topped with eggs, swimming in home-made HP sauce. We shared 3 bar snacks as starters then had 2 mains. I also ordered a side of onion rings (huge, but fried in clean oil & fresh tasting.) We couldn't finish our mains so sadly didn't have room for a pudding (the baked meringue, rhubarb & cream / blood orange posset sounded amazing but we'll have those next time!) This pub is next to the Law Courts & very close to the Travelodge on...
