Had a wonderful birthday party here in gorgeous surroundings and great service. Booking is essential but easy using the online system. Food a little bit of a let down unfortunately but will try again (no doubt for another party!)
Food and drinks menu is exciting and you feel like you'll get something different here. Cocktails were exciting and different (around £8 or £9). Lots of options for Vegans veggies and gluten free.
Starters were great and interesting. Chaat and chili chicken were stand out. Chicken 65 for me wasn't that interesting, like spicy strips / wings you might get at a chicken shop nothing more interesting than that - the chive dip was nice though , but again not to different to what you can in supermarkets or creamy sauces from other takeaways. Beetroot starter was hotter than expected for my friends.
Mains were more of a mixed bag and not interesting in the way I'd hoped. Chicken pepper roast was interesting with use of pink peppercorns, but I felt the flavours didn't come through enough. Lamb rogangosh was really quite disappointing, less flavour than some similar curries at your typical Indian takeaway. The onions and dry ginger flavour should have r come through a lot more, but actually the blander blended base was the main focus. Lamb was soft though and well cooked. Gunpowder chips were less interesting than nandos peri chips for me (quite one dimensional spiciness compared to nandos sweet and salt complexity). Berry pulao was less good than the similar barberry pulaos you get at Persian / Iranian restaurants - not as buttery or appetising.
Gajar ki halwa / rhubarb and carrot halwa was an interesting dish as much fresher than usual carrot halwa. Some nice textures. Worth trying but quite pricy for what it is.
Drinks were more interesting and in some ways the stars of the show - very dramatic and interesting.
For a smokehouse, I felt that smokiness didn't come through in any of the dishes I tried but perhaps I chose the wrong things. The lamb and chicken could be tikka and smoked before adding to stir fries or curries and this would certainly add some interest
Khai Khai in bangla means I'm eating I'm eating - but I wouldn't be coming back for the food really. Ambience, interior, service, drinks are what scores the restaurant 4* whereas the food was more like 3* for me - but I'm a huge foodie so had expectations of this place, especially as dabbawal is so great for food (same teams)
Thank you to the staff though we had a great night and the free birthday cake...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Khai Khai Newcastle, an Indian restaurant, and it was a delightful experience. We opted for the smoke plates, and the flavors we encountered were simply phenomenal.
Starting with the chicken kebab, it was perfectly cooked and packed with spices that created a wonderful blend of flavors. The meat was tender and juicy, with a hint of smokiness that added a unique touch to the dish.
Next, we tried the lamb chops, and they were a true highlight of our meal. The lamb was incredibly succulent and had a beautiful charred exterior that enhanced its taste. The seasoning was spot on, resulting in a harmonious balance of spices that danced on the palate.
We also ordered the chaat, a traditional Indian street food dish. It was a burst of tangy and spicy flavors, with a medley of crispy textures. The combination of the crunchy puris, tangy tamarind chutney, cooling yogurt, and aromatic spices made it a delightful and refreshing appetizer.
To complement our meal, we had the tadka daal. The lentils were cooked to perfection, with a rich and creamy texture. The tadka, or tempering, infused the dish with layers of aromatic spices and flavors, making it a comforting and satisfying choice.
The overall dining experience at Khai Khai Newcastle was fantastic. The staff was attentive and friendly, ensuring that our needs were met throughout the meal. The ambiance was warm and inviting, providing a pleasant environment to savor the delicious food.
If you're looking for authentic Indian flavors and a diverse range of dishes, I highly recommend Khai Khai Newcastle. Their smoke plates, including the chicken kebab and lamb chops, are exceptional, and the chaat and tadka daal were equally delightful. It's a must-visit for Indian food enthusiasts seeking a memorable...
Read moreI cannot express how pleased I was to find this gem. Travelling for work I was unsure where to go for food, so I called at 6.00pm for a last minute reservation at 7.00pm and they had no issues with that.
The atmosphere was really nice and was not overwhelming, especially as I was on my own. The staff were so polite and felt they really looked after you. They all seemed to be very knowledgeable on the menu and even helped me chose what to have.
I had to try two starters because I could not chose one. The Saffron Paneer Tikka and Onion and Samphire Bhajis were really nice and probably the best Bhajis I have ever had with Samphire being one of my favourite ingredients.
For my main I had the Old Dehli Butter Chicken with Saffron Rice which was sublime! There was only 4 chunks of really tender chicken in amongst the sauce but they were so large it was more than enough!
For desert I had to continue the authenticity this establishment project. So I had what was highly recommended to me, the Homemade Gulab Jamun was to die for and if I will be craving anything it will be these Milky Dumplings! With a Mango Lassi, I felt that was the ultimate combination.
My only issue was that I always had a different waiter, instead of having a waiter for a particular area. Even though they were lovely it felt alittle chaotic.
Overall, they honour there statement with fresh and quality ingredients and I highly recommend this place for a special occasion, dinner alone or in a large group! My only annoyance like in any restaurant they should not add service charges but accept they have done a good job...
