The Northumbria Hussar
The Northumbria Hussar is one of those pubs that does exactly what you'd expect, no more, no less. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel—just a straightforward local spot with decent prices and freshly prepared food, even if the menu feels a bit like it was put together by committee. The dishes arrive fresh enough, but the combinations don’t always hit the mark, and the overall offering is a bit of a mixed bag.
The décor leans into a traditional, old-style aesthetic, though it doesn’t quite deliver the atmosphere to match. There's a slightly flat feel to the place that makes it hard to call it cozy or lively. Still, if you're after a quiet pint without the fuss, it gets the job done.
One unexpected gem is the Sunday board game club, which brings a bit of life and community spirit to the week’s slower end. It’s a nice touch in an otherwise unremarkable setting.
All in all, The Northumbria Hussar is perfectly mediocre in a comforting sort of way. Not a destination, but not a disappointment either.

Read moreLovely clean and visually pleasing , staff can either be super friendly or cold as ice . A little disappointed in the recent Sunday lunch , meat was tasty and nicely cooked however the veg was waterlogged and the red cabbage was too on the vinigary side for my taste . Everything seemed to lack seasoning . Compared to the old Sunday lunch ( although my last visit was pre lockdown ) it was squashed onto a child's plate to look bigger . Not sure what the change in food is and it certainly wasn't the worst Sunday lunch I have had but it was " nice " at best . Not the old Sunday vibes , very empty at peak Sunday lunch time , it used to be packed and quite difficult to secure a lunch if not prepared to get down early . Again it was OK and I wouldn't not eat it again but with others close at the same prices I would prefer to make the effort to walk there instead . Soz hussar , love the outside area and that you are dog friendly and have a comfy pub to do the quiz and have drinks in but the food maybe could be tweeked just a little and you would be the perfect local...

My son went for a pizza and to be fair he said it was good.
The wife went so Persian chicken & rice while I went for the Persian kebab with flatbread. Both dishes came with salad.
My "kebabs" were just dense lumps of beef mince. Absolutely no spice or flavour. I honestly had to cover it in pepper just to raise the flavour level from zero.
The wife's chicken looked disappointed, it was a scrawny chicken leg covered in burnt skin.
We both left the majority of our meals and said we'd never come back.
We were the only customers in there so I'm struggling to find an excuse for the poor food.
Normally, when eating out we get asked how the meal is/was. It didn't happen here, probably too embarrassed to ask.
Not sure what has changed but the drop in quality since our last visit was massive.
The "good" pizza does nothing to convince me to...
