NP20 Bar and Kitchen — Restaurant in Newport

Describing itself as ‘…vibrant and contemporary…’ the NP20 certainly has attractive decor with a post industrial theme and a selection of tables and booths. However, at lunch time it is anything but vibrant as we were the only guests. We have been looking forward to visiting the restaurant for quite some time but rarely get into Newport so took advantage of a rare visit. The staff were lovely but looked surprised to see guests and we should have turned around and left at that point, but sadly we didn’t. Once seated we ordered drinks and some fairly straightforward meals (Fish & Chips and A Classic Burger). As we waited for our meals we enjoyed our drinks but looking around we could see the tables whilst all set were still covered in salt and pepper and our pepper was empty but not a big deal. We watched the ‘chef’ arrive and the meals arrived in good time thereafter but the fish was overcooked on the outside and the batter was still gooey on the inside, the tartar sauce was inedible. The burger was cheap meat dressed up with a little coleslaw and cheese. Both meals came with a reasonable portion of chips but very boring standard frozen chips. I asked for ketchup which came in an uninspiring McDonalds style plastic tub. We were both hungry but neither of us finished our meals as they were that poor. I can’t believe that a hotel chain of that standing could lack the passion to want to offer more inspiring meals made from fresh ingredients! As you might guess we won’t...

Food: For starters we ordered the fried king shrimp and selection of bread. Shrimp cooked well and rich in flavour but not overpowering, bread seemed to be baked fresh with the only caveat that salted butter would have been better. Overall starters very good. For mains we ordered the chicken and chorizo tagliatelle, and pork belly. Chorizo in the tagliatelle was underwhelming but chicken and pasta were cooked well, slightly oily. Pork belly was 10/10, simple but classy. Unique flavouring with the black pudding mash, pork belly nice and crisp on top and juicy and tender underneath. Although more colour on the plate would have been appreciated.

Service: Waiters were very professional, friendly and chatty, very good service. The meal cost £54 for the previously mentioned two starters and two mains, and two (non-alcoholic) drinks. Chilled water given at no extra charge.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere was very quiet as there were not many other customers, although we did visit on a Sunday evening. Music would help the atmosphere. Despite this the decor and vibe were very pleasant and classy, not too minimalistic. Industrial style ceiling was done very well unlike other popular restaurants.

Overall, I can't recommend the Mercure NP20 Bar and Grill enough. Whether you're looking for a fantastic meal, a relaxed evening with friends, or a special celebration, this place has it all. I'll definitely be returning soon to indulge in more of their...
