Beautiful hotel, but could have a few more small amenities in rooms š¤
My fiancƩ and I had a beautiful stay at the Mercure Hotel when attending Wales for a church convention.
Location - The hotel is located in the city centre in Newport and itās very close to the Friars Shopping Centre and Newport Food Market (4 minute walk). Parking is not available onsite but itās a short walk to the nearest car park which is very handy (7 minute walk).
Staff - The hotel staff were lovely! Main desk were so polite regardless of it being a busy check-in period over the weekend. I didnāt catch her name but to the person who wished us a lovely stay, we appreciate your kindness. Zero qualms with check in or check out š
View - We were very lucky to be on one of the higher floors facing the beautiful hills and nature of Wales. The sunrise was also a beautiful touch to witness!
Bedroom - EVERYTHING WAS SO CLEAN! Spotless in fact, so kudos to the hotel staff for the upkeep - especially after a busy day out. The bed was extremely soft and comfortable. Windows donāt open (which is understandable as itās very high floor) but the A/C definitely worked! It was cool when needed, and nice and toasty for the cooler evenings. The rooms must also be very soundproof because I couldnāt even hear a peep of any talking in corridors, next door, traffic outside, or anything so we had a very peaceful stay.
Unfortunately, there was no fridge, or small things like biscuits in the room which were the only things Iād suggest adding (especially for the price), but other than this there were main essentials such as a kettle (tea and coffee), iron, iron board, wardrobe space, TV, etc.
Bathroom - Small but very aesthetically pleasing! The interior design for the bathroom was stunning. Nice light-up mirror, beautiful lighting (for makeup lovers), and a nice roomy shower - and, again, everything was CLEAN!!! We love that š§¼
Theyāve gone green so no shower caps or nail files etc in the bathroom which was unfortunate but these things can be requested from the main desk downstairs.
Restaurant/Bar - The Restaurant/Bar area looked very lovely and roomy, and had a very quick service. We ended up ordering in breakfast but Iād love to try the hotel food some time.
Overall, this is a beautiful hotel with amazing interior placed quite randomly in the middle of a shopping area but nonetheless, we had a very comfortable stay and would recommend for couples for a quick...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOne of the best hotels that I have ever stayed in. Truly a place that the owners employees and people of Newport should be proud of. I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights at the beginning of July. The chartist tower dominates the city centre and looks impressive from the outside. On entering the hotel the feeling of quality and the ability to impress continues. A stylish reception and a warm welcome awaits. Hung on the walls throughout the hotel are pictures and literature of the famous Newport Transporter Bridge, a really good idea that had me visit every floor of the hotel so I could view the artwork and take in the history of the bridge. I stayed in a large room with a sofa bed that sleeps 2 as well as a really comfortable double bed. This is the first time I've stayed at a hotel and not been disturbed by other guests or staff, completely silent and no lights shining through the windows, perfect. The room was really nice and equipped with everything you would need for a short trip. The bathroom was huge, fitted with a good shower and his and hers wash basins. Bath robes, slippers and toiletries were all present. There was a huge TV in the living area as well as in the bedroom, and history of the Transporter Bridge continued. Eating at the hotel was another quality experience, the bar and restaurant was stylish and comfortable with an outdoor seating area that overlooked Newports high Street. I was lucky enough to be waited on by Rhiannon during all my visits to the restaurant, the warm welcome, service and attention I received was out of this world. Not once did I find myself waiting for a drink or trying to attract the attention of a server. With Rhiannon always nearby to help I never had that uncomfortable feeling I sometimes have when dining alone, she's a true asset to the hotel. The final things I have to mention are the views, from the higher levels of the hotel the views are absolutely amazing. My room looked out onto the river usk and took in the old castle, many bridges over the river and the rugby stadium, I spent hours staring out of the windows that ran the length of the room. The Mercure hotel really is a diamond...
Read moreCheck in-online for a seamless arrival the email said, "On arrival get your key straight away." So I checked in online. When I arrived the receptionist got my room key and paperwork straight out of the box. So far so good. Then he went on to his computer and attempted to try and charge me the whole amount for my stay, despite my reservation and my on-line check-in acknowledgement confirming that I'd paid the majority using Accor points, so only needed to pay £24.62. After over 5 annoying minutes we got that resolved. Then shortly after getting into my 15th floor room, the fire alarm sounded. Just after I left my room about to descend 15 flights of stairs it stopped. Then it started again, stopped, started, stopped..... When I eventually got through to reception on the phone to inquire before starting my 15 floor stair descent I was told it was a false alarm caused by a fault on the fire alarm system of the bank next door??? What the ??? So ignoring the continuing intermittent soundings and strobe flashing from the fire alarm in my room I thought I'd turn on the TV. A thorough search confirmed that there was no remote controls provided - for either TV. Another phone call to reception, "is it in the basket along with the magazines?" he asked. "There's nothing in the basket, no magazines or remote controls I replied." A remote control was delivered to my room soon afterwards. There were good city views from the room and I had a delightful breakfast in the morning which went without a hitch. I received a warm and helpful welcome from Lesley on breakfast reception. The overall experience on this stay was not at a four star level. As a Platinum member of Accor's loyalty scheme I was not impressed comparing Mercure Newport to other hotels in the group that I have stayed in. This was a one-off trip to stay in Newport, based on this experience I certainly won't be returning. It'll be Cardiff for...
