3 star rating is an average as different aspects have different star ratings. 5 stars for cleanliness and Covid 19 protocols, wiping down tables and asking you to sanitize when entering when eating in. 4 stars for service, quick and polite and wearing masks. They are famous for the fish and chips here and I had the standard cod which was very nicely cooked and a good size slab with nice batter. 4 stars for the fish as it has bones in and skin on which is stated on the menu although this is were the cost cutting seems to be a theme. This is the first time ever I have come across this. 5 stars for the mushy peas, large portion great taste and piping hot. 1 star for the chips climbing to 5 stars as the first portions where cold and small and bitty. After advising the waitress she was more than happy to replace them without hesitation. When returning with pipping hot and nicer sized chips she thanked me for bringing it to their attention as the hot storage was not set to the right temperature!! 1 star for the children's chicken nuggets and beef burger which were awful in taste and texture and left uneaten, on advising the staff, the reply was it is what the suppliers give us!!!! Which was astounding! A person on a table opposite made similar comments on the quality of the kids sausage stating "You should think of changing your sausage supplier".I am sure spending a few more pence on better quality food is worth it? Prices are very reasonable for fish and chips compared with No 1 but the kids menu are overpriced for the quality. If you want fish and chips and don't mind bones and skin then this is your place. If you want food for the kids I am sure there are restaurants that cater better for them. Drinks are also...

i have been going to Mary Janes for over 20 years and it is always a special treat but oh what a disapointment on this occasion, our party was 4 persons myself and partner brother -in-law and my 88 yearold mother-in-law. Service was quite quick after we ordered skate and chipswfor all of us

What a dissapointment the food was slaped in front of us ladies first and finess definatly not.

My chips were extra greasey posibly fry ups noboddy else commented on the chips but the skate looked nice. Wrong !!!!!!!

At this point my mother in law said that she thought she could smell amonia so we all said send it back but not whishing to make a fuss she said it was only to one side and would eat the middle after another attempt and despite us telling her to send it back she said she would just eat the chips, at this point my partner stepped in and callded the waitress who said she was sorry the fish was off and offered a replacment which she declined.

There then apppeared sombody who seemed to be in charge. and she explained that it was normal for skate to smell of amonia to me this did not ring true as i come from a family of of fishermen both on my mothers side and my farthers side.

I myself worked on fishing boats for 30 years plus so to be told that it was normal was adding insult to injury.

As for my Skate while it did not smell of amonia it had been over cooked and was very dry not the usual quality we to which we had looked forwad to

It will be a long while before i will be able to convince my partner to...

Fish scales left on?!

I've been coming here for 20 years as I live locally but I've just had the worst fish and chips I've ever eaten. I don't mind skin on, but I expected fish to be fully descaled before cooking! I had tons of fish scales stuck in my mouth which were awful and ruined the meal.

Also, I think because they had a bit of a rush, they didn't keep the oil hot enough and therefore the fish was extremely greasy. Pools of oil throughout.

And the chips were underdone as well.

I had already come all the way home so I didn't bother to come back to tell them, and don't know what would they do anyway.

Service was very slow (Thursday night around 6pm) and 2 regular haddock and 1 large chips took a full 25 minutes from queuing to walking away, 18-20 minutes of that waiting was after ordering. The man frying seemed very unhappy and snapped at his colleagues who tried to help him get orders organised.

I can't believe how the quality has gone downhill. It's like they don't care anymore which is so sad after coming here for two decades. When in Cromer I will now go to alternative at top of ramp. It's so sad to see a small independent business, especially such an iconic one,...

I’m visiting Cromer for 5 days. As always I did some research for recommendations in local community groups. Several people recommended Mary Jane’s for fish and chips. So after arriving in Cromer this afternoon and getting the van set up, I ventured into Cromer, my first destination, Mary Jane’s. I ordered a large cod and chips but was only charged for a medium because the cook had ‘broken the fish’. Fair dues, I wasn’t going to argue and appreciated the gesture. Good customer service isn’t easily found these days. Upon receiving my order I took it down to the pier to eat whilst watching the sun set as I’ve learned is a very English thing to do when visiting a seaside town. The food was amazing. The cod was very fresh and well cooked and the chips were as you’d expect from a ‘choppy’, thick and plentiful. I’ll definitely be returning at least one more time before I leave the area until my next visit.

Lousy, greasy fish and chips, totally over priced sausage and chips at £9.50. Okey, if the two sausages had been butcher's, rather than a leading cheap supermarket brand, then £9.50 be acceptable. Matching the cheap sausages were the awful, cheap sauce sachets on the table, tasted disgusting too. No Heinz, or HP at this overpriced dump. On going to pay the bill was asked cash, or card. Tapped the machine and no sooner I'd payed when I was met with attitude by a young girl (not the slim one) stating we aren't ment to accept American Express. Hardly my fault, terribly rude attitude so would advise against eating at this establishment on the grounds of a member of staff's attitude, and generally poor food. Much better run establishment around the corner I'd highly recommend walking there.

Love, love, this fish and chip shop. This place is a must when in Cromer, but today, not so much. I have been coming on holiday in the local area for years, and we have to pay a visit a couple of times when we are here. Today, we paid a visit on the 13/9/23 at around 12, and we took the fish and chips to eat on the pier. But when eating the fish and chips the chips were cold and dry, we have never had this experiance here before, but when you are paying a good bit of money, you expect it to be fresh and edible, the fish was gorgeous but the chips not so much. Make sure you pay a visit here when in the area, but just be aware.
