I saw some good reviews for Five Guys so decided to try out our local one with my wife last Tuesday in Nottingham.
On entering it looked like an American style diner - bright, clean but fairly bland. There was however a large pile of boxes (ingriedients and stock) in our path as we entered which was a bit strange. The general feel was generally on a par with Burger King in feel. Not bad but definitely not premium.
It was a Tuesday afternoon and not busy, however the young lady at the till seemed not very interested and actually irritated that we were there at all. There were no listings for fries on the menu board so we weren't sure if the burgers came with fries or not, our server did not ask us and seemed annoyed when I enquired. The prices for the burgers were what I'd expected - about £8 for a large (double) burger and about £6 for a small burger. The milkshake we ordered was pricey at just under £5 but we gave that a try. I also ordered a large refillable soft drink for £3 - pretty standard again. I was still surprised when the bill came to a total of £26.50. Then I noticed on my receipt that the large Cajun fries I ordered was £5! That's the most I've ever paid for fries and what compounded the issue was that fries were not listed on the menu board which feels like a bit of a trap. They were also far too salty.
To sum up - the burgers were good, very tasty but not as big as the word 'large' would have you believe.
Service was not good - from this one experience both McDonald's and Burger King try harder and do better. That's not on for a place that is charging these prices.
I don't think the premises reflect the prices - like I said the diner felt comparable to a Burger King but with inferior service. As it's marketed as a premium burger place I would expect to pay more but not twice as much which is effectively what happened. £26.50 is a price (still high) I would expect to pay at a restaurant with waiter service that served posh burgers. Five Guys is not that.
But the thing that really irks me is the price of the fries, specifically the fact that they weren't listed on the main menu board. It feels very disingenuous.
This is a shame as the burgers were good, but there are other restaurants in Nottingham that do premium burgers with...
Read moreThe chips were great, as I’d heard and expected: crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, skin-on. However, I’m not sure they are worth £4.50 for a small cone and have had nicer chips from other places for cheaper. The pricing in general is over the top and does not reflect the quality of the food, which me and my boyfriend found to be unsatisfactory.
These are comments about the general Five Guys menu, but I would say that it is really awful for vegetarian options. The only veggie thing you can get is a ‘veggie sandwich’, or ‘veggie sandwich with cheese’, which is what I got. It’s just a lot of vegetables, all of which it says on the menu you can add to burgers for free, crammed in a bun with a bit of American cheese and no sauce or seasoning. It was not pleasant at all, I couldn’t eat all of it. The cheese was also strange with the vegetables, not a nice combination. I think Five Guys should offer a veggie patty or veggie meat substitute of some kind, like almost all other fast food restaurants now do, including McDonalds, Burger King, KFC. My boyfriend also got the hotdog and said it was extremely soggy, plain and messy, not worth the price.
Secondly, I’d heard good things about Five Guys service as my friend works there and reports that they take customer service very seriously. The service in this one was mixed. The lady who took my order was extremely unfriendly, barely speaking a single word to me and looking really annoyed the whole time for an unclear reason. She may have been having a bad day and that’s fine, but it doesn’t feel great. It was also a good 20 mins from when we ordered till our food was ready. Then, a man who I asked for cutlery was lovely, helpful and attentive. The customer service experience therefore equals out to average for me.
One last thing, the seating was quite nice but the tables were really quite dirty, as was the floor. I think they should be more vigilant about cleanliness and would expect more for the price, again. Most McDonalds I’ve been to are...
Read moreThis five guys is in a really convenient location on the square in central Nottingham. I've been a few times and I've never had to queue for a long time, they're always fast in this respect. There's a range of toppings to go on your burger for free so you can build the perfect burger for you It's worth saying the food is amazing. I stand by that five guys is one of the best burgers I've had, I think they're beautiful. However, they are pricey. But when you order the fries, you only need a small as they fill a little pot up then shovel a load more into the bag. The drink is also refillable, so around £15 for a cheeseburger (built how you like), with plenty of fries and a refillable drink, actually isn't so bad I also find it a great place to be able to go alone and not feel judged. I often go to university on days I don't have classes to just study, so I tend to be on my own and want to go for a quick lunch, and five guys always feels the best place if I want to eat in. Why not 5 star? The last couple of times I've been, it's been very quiet and yet actually waiting for my order to be made has taken quite a long time, around 20 minutes as you stand at the side to wait...
