Excellent location in Nottingham's Market Square with an excellent Menu & great service.
We visited The Slug and Lettuce on Saturday 24th April. We had been let down by another establishment so we hadn’t booked but decided to queue up at see what happened. We were glad we did! After 5 minutes or so, a waiter came and spoke to us and informed us that there would be a 15-minute wait. We thought this sounded reasonable and agreed. We were happily seated within 15 minutes and were given a 90-minute slot for our meal which we felt was fair and enough time to enjoy our food and drinks. The attentive waitress who served us even agreed to let us change seats so that we could enjoy a sunnier spot. We had been quite chilly in the shade so we were delighted to move tables.
We were invited to order some drinks and chose to take advantage of the two for one cocktails on offer, opting for a selection of the Raving Rainbow Cocktails, Zombies and a Gin based cocktail. The drinks menu is very extensive and you’ll be spoilt for choice but my favourite of all the cocktails I tasted was the Raving Rainbow Cocktail. This was served in a long glass, with each section of the drink separated into vibrant attractive colours. The ingredients for this cocktail are listed on the menu: a mix of grenadine, passion fruit purée, Midori, Smirnoff Red Label vodka, blue Curaçao and Red Bull Tropical Sugarfree.
The outside menu was more extensive than I had expected. Many bars are offering a very limited menu in post Covid times and so I was pleased to see a good selection available to suit all diets, from Italian favourites such as Lasagna and Gnocci, American style options including stacked burgers and onion rings, sharing platters and light salads through to vegetarian options and the British national favourite – Fish and Chips. It is hearty pub grub with a modern twist and quite satisfying to the palate. I opted for a rather simple Scampi & chips, a timeless classic. The bar was happy to bring me a side salad to accompany this dish instead of the options of peas which was on the menu. I had expected a rather basic side salad, perhaps with some red onion thrown in for a splash of colour, so it was a lovely surprise when they brought me a rather more impressive side salad which contains the following:
Mixed leaves with a lemon & olive oil dressing, cucumber, onion, avocado, peppers, soya beans and tomatoes, finished with omega and sesame seeds. It was delicious. The lemon and oil dressing brought out the fresh, crispness of the salad and the seeds added a lovely texture with a nutty flavour. Avocado is one of my favourites and the consistency was beautifully creamy and melted in the mouth. My chips were just the right combination of fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside, and while the batter on my scampi was just ever so slightly on its way to been a little more cooked than I personally prefer, the scampi inside was still beautifully tender and a joy to bite into.
My companions opted for the brisket burgers with accompanying fries and seemed very happy with their choices. It certainly exceeded my expectations for pub food and I would recommend The Slug & Lettuce to anyone looking for a quick bite to eat of an evening or lunchtime.
Throughout our visit the staff were attentive, friendly and wore a smile. I could see that they were extremely busy as there were many people seated and waiting to be seated, but they did not falter for a moment and were welcoming for the entire duration. Thank you, will...
Read moreI attended an Xmas party here (in January 2024) and wouldn't personally visit here again. The Bartender (Keegan) refused to measure out the alcohol properly (I could see right in front of me he was only measuring 75% of the way and when mentioning he was doing this consistently he said that the Supervisor wished his staff to be quick). It seemed at S&L there's less focus on accuracy thus there's shameless, conspicuous dishonesty at this Slug & Lettuce's bar and perhaps all others nationwide - all for the sake of speed... Definitely not an ethos I would recommend teaching as someone who works in Hospitality myself and who has worked in Customer Service for over a decade.
I haven't liked the idea of going to any other S&L since visiting this branch at Long Row in case this disdainful ethos has been taught to all Bartenders throughout the nation.
The spread of food accommodated me (as a Vegan who is the type to be satisfied if just one decent vegan dish is offered; the nachos platter at Slug & Lettuce) however I and a number of colleagues were shocked the food disappeared within an hour or so without any S&L Staff announcing the food was about to be taken away/was being taken away... A number of colleagues like myself (who were socializing at the beginning of the 6pm-start party - only having eaten little initially to ensure all 40 of us was able to try all the food) still found ourselves hungry (having thought the food would be out for much longer so colleagues who were hungrier/not having eaten at home prior (like a number of other colleagues had) could actually satisfy their hunger - knowing noone else would be going hungry as a result.
I ended up leaving before midnight and going to the McDonald's opposite where my hunger was satisfied - disappointed in having to pay for food when I shouldn't have needed to if Slug & Lettuce staff were attentive
Not feeling looked after by Slug & Lettuce I would never visit again. Nice interior design...
Read moreCame here on Saturday night around 7/8ish, the first bar of the night and went upstairs thinking the toilets were upstairs (I had been before and thought I remembered them being there so just went straight up). There was a lady with what I think was joker makeup on, who interrupted us when we started to ask her where the toilets were with a very aggressive “have you got a table booked, have you booked it’s booking only here”. I said no we’re just looking for the toilet to which she replied “well you’ve just come from where the toilets are the next ones are up three flights of stairs”. I said “okay so where are they” and she rolled her eyes and said “I’ve just said they’re downstairs you’ve gone passed them”. I said okay I get that by where downstairs and she said “there’s very clear obvious signs that you’ve ignored” and pointed to where they were which was only what I was looking for in the first place. I said to her you don’t need to be rude and she shrugged her shoulders and pulled a face. I don’t know what her problem was or if she just hates her job that bad, but it was absolutely disgusting and she probably shouldn’t work in a customer facing environment if she doesn’t have the correct attitude for it. I was appalled that the first place I went to I was treated like I was doing something wrong and spoken to in such a manner for simply asking where the toilets are. Don’t know if she just ignored the fact as well that some people can’t read or may have vision impairments which both myself and friend do (not an excuse but it’s the face that she just assumed). It just completely ruined the night from the start and I’ve not stopped thinking about it since wondering why she thought this was acceptable. We were customers at the end of the day and simply needed help locating a bathroom, it was completely...
