We had a pre theatre booking and arrived at 5pm. Only 1 waitress as her colleague was late for work. We were still served on time though for getting to our show.. We both had steak which we ordered fro. The a la carte side of the chalk board. When it arrived it seemed quite small and thin for £23 each. However we were only charged £12 each for that course so it seems we were served the value 2 course option. The steak was tasty and covered in a sauce. Served with very straw thin chips and a herby salad.I wasn't sure it tasted good but didnt want to to make a fuss as my friend said it was herby so i thought that was how it should taste. She had eaten there before. We thought it was weird how you could only have a small glass of wine or a bottle. No other option.Perhaps buy some bigger wine glasses? She had to order two small glasses, then leave the table to order more an hour later. Paper table cloths were awful too. The place just needs to improve on the quality on a few things to meet the French standard. I was very unwell half way through the theatre show and only had 1 wine and soda as I'm not a big drinker. Desserts were beautiful and it is good value if you only eat and have the 1/2/3 course option before 6.30pm. Drinks are expensive 6.50 small wine (friends) £7.50 for my small sauvignon. Not sure I...
Read moreI would like to call this a ‘hidden gem’, but seeing as it is in a very central city location, hidden isn’t accurate. First time dining here, recommended by a friend as an ideal pre-theatre restaurant as it is literally a minute away from the Theatre Royal. Anyway, there are two menus, a menu of the day and a specials menu. These change regularly and are written on a blackboard; you can check that day’s menu online. The menu of the day is really good value, two courses for £18 and three for £23. I skipped the starter, and had the steak frites which came with a lovely green peppercorn sauce, veg and the nicest chips I have had for a long time. I would say that the steak comes rare so you would have to ask if you want it cooked more. After much discussion about whether the peach tart had crème patissiere in it, I was assured that it didn’t (I don’t like anything custard-like), so I ordered that and it was absolutely gorgeous. The peaches were caramelised and the sauce was divine, like liquid bonfire toffee. I finished off with a very good coffee and also had a soft drink. My share of the bill was £24 including tip which I thought was very good value taking into account the location. I would definitely...
Read moreWas in the mood for good French food in Nottingham and this looked well rated so decided to pop in to French Living.
Very French vibe inside. They leave you to it until you need their assistance… the French way! I went for the set menu du jour (all on the blackboard) for £25 for 2 courses… well priced.
Started with terrine with some proper freshly sliced baguette… huge portion and I needed more bread!
The star of the show though was the steak frites… a MUST if you go. Easily one of the best I’ve had outside of France. So many small details made it excellent. The perfectly cooked fries, rich peppercorn sauce, fresh ratatouille, other very well seasoned veggies as well. Perfectly cooked steak that was juicy throughout… not a chewy bit in sight. The sort of meal you don’t want to finish as then it ends!
Didn’t want a dessert but I was tempted by the creme brûlée… it wasn’t cheap but the thickness and richness of the cream made it very indulgent. Top 5 that I’ve had for sure. All washed down with a carafe of house white.
Indulgent but an incredible meal - proper French food in the heart of...
