I stay in hotels a couple of times a month in many locations due to my work. I don't usually review them. This one was....special.
I recently spent 12 nights in Roomzzz in Nottingham. It was not a great experience for a great many reasons. The smell in the room upon check in was awful. I'm not sure if it was a cleaning chemical or some kind of cheap cologne from the previous occupant. I can still smell the odour on my suitcase several weeks later. I kept the window in the room open for several days which eventually cleared the worst of the smell. I didn't have time to make a complaint, I was working 12+ hours a day so I just dealt with it.
A knock on effect of having my window open due to the smell, was the 7am wake up call of construction vehicles for the building site across the road. At the other end of the day, people would frequently hang out talking loudly and smoking outside the window on weekend nights.
The floor in the room was some kind of black ash laminate finish, which somehow managed to be simultaneously slippery and sticky. Pretty unpleasant. The room lighting was designed by boy racer with an obsession with coloured LED lighting.
The whole placed seemed to be semi functional. One of the 2 lifts never worked in the entire time I was there. One of the laundry rooms was out of order, the other seemed to be perpetually in use by someone using all the machines at once to do the laundry for a household of several people.
On one memorable night at Roomzzz, there was a very specific type of party going on in the room next door. There were very loud sounds of vigourous intercourse between 10pm and midnight, which eventually settled down. However, there were several men with deep voices in the room talking loudly and I woke up at 4am, 5am and 6am due to the noise. I tried to phone reception to make a complaint, but of course the telephone in the room did not work. I rushed to work in the morning, when I returned in the early evening, there was nobody on reception to talk to about it, and the doorbell supplied to communicate just rang out after several minutes.
On the plus side, the kitchenette was a useful feature of the room, and I did manage to prepare some simple meals. The reception staff member when I checked in was very friendly, and I was able to check in early which was very helpful. The location is great, being only a short walk from the town centre and having lots of good pubs and venues close by. I imagine the accommodation is pretty cheap. I wasn't paying, but if I was, I'd probably pay a bit more to stay...

King size bed very comfortable and pillows. Nice sized bathroom. (Toilet, shower, sink, mirror, shaver charging point.) Compact kitchenette. (Pots, pans, crockery, fridge with freezer box, microwave, electric hob, dishwasher, sink no oven. Wardrobe space with hangers. Iron, ironing board, hairdryer. Desk, chair, sofa, bedside units and lighting. Full length mirror. Towels provided. Tea and coffee making facilities. Fill up with tea's and coffee's downstairs. Good selection of tea (English breakfast, decaf, earl grey, camomile, fruit, Nescafé coffee and decaf coffee sachets). TV and Air Con both not working. Spoke to reception and they couldn't get someone to fix them
Breakfast included but only croissants only available now. Used to also include fruit and yoghurt. A selection of cereals and milk to purchase. Coffee machine (espresso, americano latte, cappuccino) was not working. This is free refills and able to take to your room
Small shop selling some food items and essentials in case you forgot something. No fridge/ freezers containing quick meal items like ready meals (there was in the Edinburgh Roomzzz).
Not a pleasant view. Only can see street, student uni and accommodation buildings. But right in the middle of the city. Next to rock city and rescue rooms. Round the corner from theatre royal and concert hall. Shopping centre a short walk. Entertainment complex in the next block (includes cinema, restaurants, bars, crazy golf). Costa and cafe Nero around the corner
The room design was all black and dark grey. They lowered the ceilings. Makes it very closed in. Especially with how close the other buildings on the street are. Not much natural light. Could do with a light on desk.
Would still stay here again. As I started now staying at these properties when doing a city centre UK trip. Love the apartment set up. Like to not be tied down to a breakfast meal time. With no evening meal we can either cook, order takeaway or check out some of the local eateries. A more relaxed style than...
Read moreChoosing to stay at the Roomzzz apart-hotel in Nottingham for our overnight stay to go to a gig there proved to be an excellent decision.
Firstly, the website is informative, the online booking process clear and simple, and the customer service, both by email/phone prior to arrival and in-person when we got there, really was second to none. None of the group of us staying there in different rooms could fault it. It was a bonus that they put us next door to each other.
The building seems to be purpose built and the rooms are well-appointed. It was really useful to have a kitchen and fridge, and we were able to cook a pasta meal for six of us there for dinner before the gig. We loved having a sofa in the room and a large bed with a comfortable mattress. The curtains blocked out the light. The bathroom was good too, including the shower. The toiletries are high-quality The White Company ones. I liked the humour on the ‘Do Not Disturb’ card.
I knew we’d get a free croissant and coffee for breakfast, but to be honest I expected it just to be an ultraprocessed pre-packaged one. To my surprise, the free breakfast croissants were fresh and a good size. They looked and tasted like bakery ones not mass-produced ones. Delicious. My only minor negative is that the coffee in the coffee machine in reception could be better. It was free though and there was also tea and coffee in the rooms.
We paid £10 for secure overnight parking underneath the hotel.
Roomzzz Nottingham City is in the city centre, close to many amenities, including the Rescue Room (for gigs), the beautiful arboretum and Nottingham Trent University.
Staying in an apart-hotel is so much more practical and flexible than staying with a hotel chain. Roomzzz Nottingham City proved to be decent value for money with outstanding customer service and, in summary, a really positive experience. It was friendly and welcoming. Highly...
